Well actually he's not a Detroiter, but A.A. Weinman has done a few commissions in downtown Detroit.

For those of you old farts who remember the old Mercury Head dimes (1916-45), and the old Walking Liberty halves (1916-47)... these were both designed by A.A. Weinman. Weinman's half dollar walking liberty facade design was reinstituted in 1986 for the 1 oz. Silver American Eagle bullion dollars of today.

Anyway A. A. Weinman has 2 major downtown Detroit commissions... the memorial to Alexander Macomb on Washington Blvd. in the boulevard in front of the Book-Cadillac, and the memorial statue of Detroit mayor Maybury in Grand Central Park.

But few metro Detroiters are aware that the man who did these Detroit monuments, also did the famous coinage commissions for the US government.

Architect Cass Gilbert, who designed the Detroit Main Public Library, also designed a few lesser known commemorative coins early in the 20th century.
