Metro Detroit must get its act together or miss out on benefits The Free Press, http://www.freep.com/article/2 0081214/OPINION01/812140356 This great article is about how this region needs to work together or miss out of Obama's Urban/Metropolitan federal programs. The article sights the 600 million the region lost in the 1970's for transit. Also the article sights the weakness of SEMCOG and the 1970's The Option Process (T.O.P.) report. The report states the same things that are happening now, is the same things that happen in 1970's. History repeates itself. |

There is a refutation of the effectiveness of federal intervention in cities contained in Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist's book, The Wealth of Cities. http://www.amazon.com/Wealth-C ities-Revitalizing-Centers-Ame rican/dp/0738201340 Norquist suggests that most federal interventions have upset the natural development of cities and undermined their ability to compete. |

It's likely a reflection of its membership but SEMCOG has always been a foot dragger on the changes needed to transform SE Michigan. Compare SEMCOG to the regional group in the Grand Rapids area to see the differences in a group that is dysfunctional and one that has its act together. |
