They should have let him come. Could have been interesting. Maybe Sen. Shelby could have come with.

I used to have a little Jim Bunning doll...really. It was soft bodied with a plastic head. I think it went the way of my Beatles wallet and everything else.

He is not a real Detroiter, any more than Mitt Romney is a real Detroiter.

Why is a US Senator selling autographs at GTC? Seriously, does this guy really need the money?

I read in the paper that it's $35 to get a signed baseball and $45 for a poster. Kind of ironic that that it costs that much and he voted to put the screws to this area.

I'll bet you that it was a mutual decision. They may not have wanted him here, but I'm sure he doesn't want to come either. He's a popular attraction for them so I wouldn't doubt that they might be covering for him and plan to have him back at a later date as the article suggests.

Maybe this had something to do with it...

quote:

Taylor Mayor Cameron Priebe, who said he'd written Bunning a personal note imploring him to reconsider his opposition to the auto rescue package, was stunned when I told him Bunning would be in town to sell his signature.

"I doubt he'll have many takers at $35," Priebe said. "But as soon as I get off the phone with you, I'm going to call the UAW and see if I can't arrange for 5,000 of his biggest fans to be there when he arrives."

Anyone who thinks the above statement is a good one is a Jackass. Because you didn't get your way you are now going to excuse or endorse bodily harm on another human being. And yet you wonder why people were against the bailout or why they think the UAW is a bunch of thugs.

Wow, "sj" really believes that we should all be bootlickers. Here's a newsflash for you, a man who's been elected to the US Senate holds a tremendous amount of power in this country. If he can't stand to deal with being confronted by 5,000 people who have been directly impacted by his vote, then he needs to find another line of work. Of course, in your world, you expect all of the drones to grovel at your feet so I'm not surprised that you said what you did.

He is a thug because ???? the senator that thinks that Michigan should just be flushed down the drain and would not be able to stand the heat of a few thousand of the people whom he wants to see out of work ? Priebe is just trying to bring him closer to the pulse of the people.

I am glad that you condone an physical attack on another human. I guess jackass was not a strong enough world.

Anyone who attacks, condones or promotes a physical attack on another human is a thug and a jackass. Big deal, your bailout didn't go through, it does not give you the right to physically assault another human being or even condone or endorse it.

I didn't condone any attack, BUT if your going to represent the people then you should be able to stand up and defend your position/vote.

Where is this jackass world ?

Guess he threw Detroit a curveball.

My son works in the Senate - Bunning is not a particularly good or bright senator, and why should he care about what Michigan wants? He's never going to run for President or anything national? McConnell also from Kentucky has a similar attitude.

Forget them - for those who aren't familiar with Kentucky remember this:

Why wont a young guy in Kentucky marry a virgin?
Well their thought process goes like this "If she ainta good nuff for her own kinfolk why wood I wan her?"

Come on people, don't you get it? The "sj" and the "Crawford"'s of the world don't want to hear from the "little people". If you dare question their authority or thoughts or those of the Bunnings of the world, you're a "thug" and a "goon" and to even suggest that you should protest is in their minds, a threat of physical attack. Nevermind that no one said anything about attacking Bunning, in their delusional world, challenging authority is a threat.

In your naive world nothing bad ever happens. It must be nice to live in a world like that.

Why do think the event was canceled, it sure wasn't because of the fear of a peaceful protest.

He's so hard up that he has to show up at a flea market to sign baseballs? It must be tough living on Senate salary of $170 K a year with full benies, staff and expense accounts.

Last time I heard him try to speak, it seemed like he had a screw or two on the loose side. Now if he was signing his bobble head...

The decision to cancel Bunning's visit was made 20 minutes after his vote. It had nothing to do with Priebe's comments. But I know that the facts are irrelevant to a smart guy like yourself.

sj, get real. You went so far as to bold the word "physical", but nowhere at all is there any mention of an attack, physical or otherwise. The idea of a "physical attack" is just your negative interpretation of the original statement about 5000 fans being there to greet Bunning.

If these 5000 people were to show up, I think the intention more likely was to humanize the UAW, to let Bunning look them in the eyes and see that real people were going to be hurt by this, not just some nameless, faceless "UAW". Please quit perpetuating the idea that there was some kind of physical attack suggested, planned or endorsed, as that is completely FALSE. The event was cancelled because they didn't want Bunning here. Please quit exaggerating and fabricating.

I don't remember seeing or hearing anything about physical violence until the paranoids brought it up. I only heard that Priebe was going to let the UAW know of Bunning's appearance. Priebe's comment about 5,000 was just a number he threw out to denote a large group of people. How could he have known how many, in his quick response to hearing of the appearance, would actually show up? It could have been 5 or even 5,000. Who knows? Someone is getting all bent out of shape for nothing. As far as violence goes, no it isn't permissable, but a protest is. A very large and loud protest would be excellent. Isn't protest an essential part of our society and democracy? I can totally understand people being very upset. Their livelihood and lives are at risk. I think Bunning should be concerned about Detroit and all auto industry jobs. That's part and parcel of being a senator. Senator's jobs are NOT to ONLY represent their states. Their job is to reach a consensus on the general good of the country as a whole. There may be times when they'll vote for specific interests of their state above the overall good. I also didn't hear anything about 'recruiting'. Communicating maybe, but recruiting? No. Some people are paranoid. It's a right wing, neo-con, nut job state of mind. The commies are coming. The queers are threatening our marriages and children. The Muslims think their god is better than our god. Universal medical coverage is going to lead to socialism. Consider the sources.

Yep, just like the socializing of the mortgage industry, banks, airline industry and oil companies.

Maybe Bunning came to his senses and realized that if someone was threatening his job he might get a little upset too.
Here's a guy that cries about Socialism and his own state bends over backwards for foreign investment in his state. They gave plenty of incentives to get them over here too.
He's a guy that should have stayed home years ago to help take care of his 10+ kids. Instead, he's making it harder for other guys to support their kids.

I've already written a Thank You note both the mayor and to Gibralter Trade Center. I do admit that a mass protest would have great. I would have there. Haven't been in a protest march since 1974.
