"Michigan State University will be home to a $550 million federal nuclear physics facility, beating out a prestigious national laboratory for the one-of-a-kind project that promises to boost the state's economy and the university's prestige."

Why would this impact the Metro Detroit area at all? Any use of this would be centered around East Lansing and the campus. Perhaps they'll swing some conference someday and need to host it downtown? I don't see a whole lot of positive spin off in the Detroit area from this announcement.

Maybe a positive spin for Michigan, and what's good for Michigan is good for Detroit?

It will bring thousands of quality jobs to the state considering the rotation of visiting scientists and grad students as well as jobs in construction. It will not have a direct impact on the city, but when good things happen for the public universities you can be sure it will have a trickle down effect to the cities.

It will have a devastating impact on Detroit because nuclear physists are smart and can count cards. They see an autoshuffle five deck job as something easy.

Tax revenues from the casinos will go down terribly. We need only stupid people in the casinos to keep our tax revenues high!

Great news!

Maybe we will have those atomic powered cars they enthused about in the Atoms for Peace 50's.

...unless the place is destroyed in a campus beer riot.

It's the other way around.

Mackinac Island, Meijer, AmWay, Lansing, Kelloggs or Ann Arbor's growth certainly isn't helping (if not hurting) Detroit.

This is a truly huge get for MSU and the State. This facility has the potential to create spin off businesses similar to Silicon Valley or other areas of the country that had technology explosions. Remember that the Research corridor links MSU, U of M and Wayne State so we could definitely see a technology renaissance in SE Michigan due to this facility.

Explain how.

-Mackinac Island = A Tourist Attraction For Northern Michigan.

-Meijer = No one store within city limits.

-AmWay = Dick DeVos, whos a 100% Grand Rapids supporter.

-Lansing = Have they ever gotten anything accomplished to prepare us for the future?

-Kelloggs = Sure, it helps Battle Creek with more tourism.

-Ann Arbor = The only "vibrant big" city in Michigan besides (perhaps) Grand Rapids & the only city in SE Michigan that's seeing some reasonable progression.

I'm not sure how any of these places are helping (or helped) Detroit directly.

Urbanize,

Are you a moron? That's the most ridiculous thing (well, actually not, most of your comments are absurd) I've heard.

You would rather that every other attraction, company, city, etc. in the state fail miserably? So, what, they would be more like Detroit?

Taking that view of things, the only way Detroit can succeed is if the rest of the state sucks?

This project will have a HUGE impact on Detroit and Michigan. Image alone, will be a major plus. It's a cutting edge, tech facility, that'll host researchers from around the world. All universities in Michigan wanted it here because they'll all share it's resources. I think MSU, UoM and WSU will share responsibility for managing it. This is exactly what Michigan and Detroit wants and needs. If we can ever get the transit up and running(A2 - Detroit, Lansing - Detroit, etc) it would provide another HUGE boost because it would ease access to and from Detroit. Detroit might then be viewed as a cool place and a bargain to live in. Additionally, this is a move away from a auto-centric economy. Do we need that, or what?
