Friend of mine recently emailed me these two photos. The first is old Canfield Station of the DPD, AKA the 13th Precinct. It was located on Canfield east of Woodward, and demolished when the new station opened up.

The second photo is of the "new" 13th Precinct station on the west side of Woodward at Canfield when it was being built in 1949. It, of course, has recently been closed as a police precinct and was sold to a private developer.

I'm only sorry that I have to shrink these photos down to Lowell's requirements. The originals are full screen and full of detail lost in the resizing.

Was the 13 done as a precinct? I always thought it was an old school.

I have called the 13th twice. Both times they were prompt and professional.

That wooden front entrance kinda reminds me of the Hamtramck police station up until a couple years ago. And why is Lowell such a big-meanie?

Aw, he's not a meanie. It's really just a matter of bandwidth, and I can't blame him for limiting size.

Ray, those are great pics. Someday I'll post some of the old police photos I've got from my Dad's 35th anniversary book. I'd love to be able to see the originals of the ones you posted.

Darn Ray, those photos gave me a serious flashback! There were some great folks at the 'new' 13th.

To avoid resizing issues, you can always link to the files themselves.

Not when the only source is on my hard drive. They were e-mailed to me and are not on any website I'm aware of. But anyone who would like to see the full screen, just email me at RDown3657@cox.net and I'll be glad to send it to you in return.

I asked Ray1936 to e-mail the full-size photos to me so I could upload them to my site:

Old Canfield station (it appears that this photo was taken on election day)

New 13 Pct. station

My dad was a patrolman at the old Canfield Station sometime between 1937 and 1947. I found this clipping from sometime in that period

Your Dad must have been quite a guy! I've got a visual of that scene in my mind.

He always told us that the guy had his little girl in the car with him. It's not mentioned in the article, tho.

I remember running boards. But they were pretty well history by the time I came on the job in '59. Sounds like I missed some fun! :-)

Thanks for posting the above photos, Ray1936. I always enjoy seeing the buildings long lost to "progress". My brother, now retired from the force, was stationed there (the 13th) nearly his whole carrier till about 10 or so years ago. If your friend has any more photos, please post them here for us. Thanks in advance.

The place is a lot smaller than I had Imagined. There is a lineup photo of the Purple Gang at the 13th precinct. I have a framed photo of the boys ,but Im not sure which precinct it was taken. It is the photo with Abe Axler seated, hands clasped. I believe they were referred to as roundup pictures.
