I've always liked Roman Village. They have homemade pasta there. Located on Dix in Dearborn, right on the Detroit border. Not too far from Giovanni's actually.

Another vote for Giovanni's.

Their pasta is excellent, and Frank Sinatra loved the place. Need more be said?

Ummm, I'm assuming nobody mentioned Mario's because it's too obvious. Mario's is better than crack.

I'd say my homemade Pesto Genovese is mighty tasty, with fresh garden basil, pine nut, garlic, olive oil, imported Pecorino Romano and Grana Padano is pretty dang good... Painstakingly prepared by hand using mortar and pestle, no blender...

As far as restaurants go, Ristorante Piccirilli in Shelby Twp. is probably the closest to authentic Italian cooking that you'll find this side of the Detroit River. The owner was born and raised in Italy and uses authentic Italian recipes influenced from the Abruzzo region where he comes from. The chefs prepare the meals using simple, basic ingredients. Garlic is used sparingly, as it generally is in Italy. The result is very close to what's served up in the restaurants and trattorias of Italy.

Is there such a thing as a bad Italian restaurant in the Detroit area? How would they stay in business? I sure haven't found one, but then again I have tomato sauce running through my veins.
