Hello!

Would anyone know a place in Detroit where I might buy a German newspaper...ANY German newspaper? Borders @ Compuware doesn't carry it.

Thanks so much!

Little Professor closed a few years ago. I think that was the best newsstand on the west side. Sorry can't help. *Viel Glueck*

The only German language newspaper in metro Detroit is the "Nord Amerikanischer Wochen End Post"... formerly "Der Detroit Abend Post".

This newspaper (with one name or another) has been published here since the mid 19th century. IIRC, it's the 2nd oldest newspaper here after the Detroit Free Press.

Their offices used to be located on Brush near Greektown. They moved to Troy about 15 years ago. They changed the name of the paper because they expanded distribution to other American cities.

You might want to google them to get their address and contact them for distribution boxes. One place that does carry them is Buchholz Imports on Old 13 Mile Rd. in Warren (about 2 blocks east of Van Dyke).

Here is the link to the Wochenpost-

http://www.wochenpostusa.com/

The irony is that I have not bought a paper in any printed language in a while, as I look at them online-Personal preference I guess. I still purchase a lot of books however.

I am sped as I can read Der Spiegel daily now:

Yeah, But there is nothing like the smell of a fresh "Der Spiegel", right off the presses.

Thank you. I'll look into this. Most newspapers I read online, but the German newspapers I like to have in hand. Danke.

Tschüß!

As someone who often goes overboard in the rudeness I can assure you that we aren't always this nice. I'm trying to work on my manners but with passion comes heated debate which often turns to being rude.

Feel free to tell me to stop being a jerk if you see one of my many rude comments/tirades.

Well, debate is healthy. ;-) I attended the Detroit City council meetings on Monday and Tuesday. Now those are some folks who can learn some manners.

But it's cheaper than paying to get into a comedy club.

Yes, but you can drink at a comedy club. At council meetings you have to be sober...

Actually, I find it very depressing. I would laugh if it weren't so sad. But, I won't start a thread about the council here. I know one already exists.

My daughter will be taking German when she starts 9th grade in the fall. Is it a hard language to learn? We've only had Spanish and I did take Latin in high school but that was many moons ago. She has to get a German-English dictionary the teacher recommended and look up basic words and their English counterparts such "the hand, the arm, etc. over the summer. I'm going to study it along with her and I think it will be a interesting language to learn. If anybody has any advice or tips, please share.

thanks,
msamslex

Others can disagree, but I don't think German is extremely hard to learn. English and German are in the same family of languages and this creates some familiarity and similarity. (For example, I've found Polish much more difficult to learn in all areas, e.g., pronunciation, grammatical rules, and sentence structure.) Learning German is by no means easy, so just encourage her to stick with it; practice; and memorize her vocabulary, noun genders, conjugation, and adjective endings. Naturally, there is a lot of memorization, but once she gets the hang of the different cases, i.e., nominative, accusative, dative, etc., she will not regret it. It may be a bit guttural, but German is a great language and using it in the beautiful German-speaking areas of Europe is a fantastic experience.

thanks Dbc, will keep that in mind. German exchange students will be there in the fall so they'll have no choice but to learn so they can converse with them. I'm sure that will make it easier in the long run.

There used to be 2 German import stores along Gratiot.

One was called Europe Import Co. at 13575 Gratiot (just checked an old gift box of theirs I had). The other was called Old Country Imports located directly across from the former Montgomery Wards, one block north of 7 Mile Rd. on Gratiot. I knew the proprietor, a lady by the name of Lucy Evans. She died in the early 1990's, without an heir.

The store was taken over by one of her employees, who did not extend the lease, and who took the remaining store contents down to Port Richie Florida, where she still resides and runs a German import store with her husband.

Msam, I've just finished my German II class. It isn't too difficult, but there is much memorization. The cases are the most difficult. This summer, the class is meeting one night a week at a Starbuck's to speak German, translate German stories, and to keep in touch. We've become family. I encourage you to take a class.

Gistok, I remember that place! We used to shop on Gratiot. My family lived on Pelkey, one block west of Schoenherr and a block south of Seven Mile Road. Thank you.

Lodgedodger,
Not sure if you are Catholic or not, but St. Joseph has the only remaining mass in Michigan that is in German. I bet they have access to plenty of perodicals. It might be worth attending even if you are not Catholic to listen to the language.

Wow, thanks Wash_man. I am Catholic--our family attended Assumption Grotto. I will check this out. I'd love to attend Mass in German. I bet the church is beautiful, too.
