There are also several bakeries in Hamtramck. You could go to the one on Joseph Campau just south of Caniff, between Campau Towers and Wendys. There's also a good one on Conant just north of Caniff.

La Gloria on Bagley is also excellent.

I got my mother a birthday cake from Astoria in January. Ever since then she cannot come and visit without stopping there to buy me some treats! Hey, I'm not complaining!

The store in the Ford building (whare Sanders used to be) has cakes. Don't expect anything fancy, but it has them.

That's the store I was thinking of. They still carried Sanders cakes for a while, now they don't?

Knudesen's is the best, not downtown, but they are in Detroit proper.

Went to Astoria and got a gorgeous German chocolate cake. Later today I'll let you know how the tasting went. Thanks for all the great suggestions!
