You just have to pay him $15 million a year. He could probably trim 5 times that much in waste in his first year. You also have to find someone who only wants one term. |

Chainsaw consultants are usually brought in to boost profits, not cut "waste." You can't put government in terms of business. It's apples and oranges. |

Why can't a city be ran like a business? What exactly is wrong with fiscal responsibility? All of our cities used to be solvent, now in the last quarter century they're all in debt and everyone seems very complacent about it. They shouldn't be in debt, they should all have surpluses. Hats off to Mulaly. Looks like a good investment. So much for "they could've got someone cheaper" and "why is he making so much?" |

Simple. In business, the name of the game is short-term profits, sinking your competition and delivering the good to shareholders, no matter what the cost. In government, the name of the game is long-term viability, cooperation and delivering services to all. If a prison, hospital or a school is profitable as a business, that's the bottom line. The cons can be recidivists, the patients can die and the students can be idiots, and, as long as the profits keep rolling in, all is well. |

401don: 15 Million? That's still less than what the current guy's gonna end up costing us. |

Detroitbill, sounds like you don't think there's waste in government? You can deliver services faster, cheaper, better in the gov't/non-profit sector as well. You start by privatizing things like waste pick-up. |

More than the cost cutting aspect I was thinking of his people handling skills - raising morale and getting people to work together toward a common goal. |

If those are the requirements we should hire bozo the clown to run the city. The strong mayor structure is broken and has now become Toxic. DetroiToxicity. IMO a city manager appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Council is the way of the future. Revise the Charter. Elect 7 Council Members from Districts and 3 At-Large. Mayor sits as President of the Council and only votes if there is a tie. We can dream of a cold hearted businessman/mayor coming in and cutting costs; but in our hearts we don't like cold-hearted businessmen running our cities. We like our politicians warm and fuzzy. Friendly, happy, smiling circus bears. Hold a tree planting, wow, the Mayor shows up. A bbq on Belle Isle and look who shows up: McFail and Hansen Clarke. Aren't we special. Dance bear dance. There's no need to re-invent the wheel, a long proven system of City Manager puts the city's operations in the hands of a pro. Right now we are in the paws of a circus bear gone mad. |
