I was wondering why the city doesn't even have one classic soda shop or ice cream parlor? Atlanta markets the crap out of Coca-cola, and the Coca-cola museum. It seems if an old fashioned soda shop opened downtown and offered vernors, sanders ice cream, homemade ginger-ale, it'd be big. Like right next to Comerica park/Ford field area. Any thoughts. |

Soda shops need that pedestrian traffic so people pop in off the street. I'm not sure Detroit has that quite yet, aside from Tigers games. |

The dessert place in Greektown has a big selection of fountain drinks, soda syrups and mixes, as well as hand dipped ice cream. |

Soda fountains are not just gone from Detroit. You can't find them anywhere. They have gone the way of the Dime Store. I know there are exceptions to this, but you won't find these places in New York or Chicago (no matter how busy the street) either. Sanders currently has several stores, with most located in traditional downtowns. These outlets are a far cry from the previous store in terms of being Soda Fountains (more like fancy Baskin-Robbins) and are nowhere near as common as they were back in the 1960's and 1970's when they were in nearly every neighborhood shopping district or mall. Don't worry about it being some sort of bad omen because it is not. When you do come across a real soda fountain, support it! |

Why none...? Most, if not all were likely chased off by the thugs. One survivor? Well, barely a survivor: Baskin Robbins on Grand River, between Old Redford and Rosedale. Pay a visit and see how the innocence of the ice cream parlor meets ghetto: receive your cone through a plexiglass baffle, the same way you'd get your 40 bagged at a party store. Is it any wonder that so many people have thrown up their hands and headed for safer harbors? |

^ Or the fact that people would rather spend their money on Starbucks etc when they want a sweet treat or beverage. Times change and so does tastes.. |

Point taken re: Starbucks & changing tastes. But in the Baskin Robbins example the bullet-proof glass went up long before coffee made the jump out of styrofoam cups. It was within living memory that stores in Detroit went without security buzzers and bank glass. |
