Bullet,

The Pepsi crate, despite being from September, 1968 (as indicated by the 9-68 stamped on the inside) may be made from older crate parts. The words Pepsi and Cola in the logo are hyphenated by a colon. This is known as a "Double Dot" Pepsi logo in the collector's world. Pepsi switched to a "single dot" logo in the early 1950's.

I have no idea who John Kar is other than it is spelled the same way as the Kar's Nuts people.

The Foremost crate is from September, 1958. (9-58)

That's all I got - I'm sure others will have more.

What are you doing with those crates?

I made a quick search at mi-brew.com, but no luck. I once found a site that covered midwestern based soft drink manufacturers of yesteryear... Another possibility. I'll see if I can "scratch" up that link.

I remember Foremost as being a supplier of dairy products, particularly the half-pint cartons of white and chocolate milk sold in vending machines and lunch lines in Metro Detroit schools during the 1950s and 1960s.

John Kar Bottling is located at 8559 Jefferson in Delray. It's just south of Dearborn St. If you open the back door you drop into the channel behind Zug island. We purchased all our pop for our wedding in 1972 from him.

Thanks for the above info guys. I had little to go on, and crates are not my forte. The Pepsi crate is in poor condition, with dry-rot and a hole in the bottom (not shown). The Kar crate is in good shape, with rust as seen on the straps. The Foremost box is rock solid, almost like new. I remember those little milk bottles Mikeg, from my early days at Marquette Elementry School. They were 3 or 5 cents back then.

Boxes such as these came in handy around our east side Detroit home when we were growing up. My dad always needed some thing to stand on or saw on, and with 12 kids, you bet there was one or two of them around. We had Borden’s deliver our milk and it came by the crate. They sure don’t make them like they use to, and I wouldn't stand on what passes a crate today. If you are interested Ookpik, e-mail me at john_doe395@hotmail.com.

If anyone would like to own these boxes, they are up for grabs for free. Please contact me at the above email. Limited time offer as they will soon be used for firewood.

P.S., I live in Ferndale.

Update: Thank you to the kind gentlemen who rescued these boxes from certain death this past weekend. Let it be known that all of the boxes found good homes, and were spared death by fire. This will surly please you box lovers out there.

Side line John Kar Story: When Nelson Mandella visited Detroit the police used DDOT coaches to transport officers to Tiger Stadium for crowd control. I ran a DDOT service truck and recieved a call that one of our coaches was on fire. Upon arrival I serviced the bus but got caught in the multitudes of people who came out for the speech, I was stuck next to Tiger Stadium from 8pm until 3am. I was dying for a drink but the only thing that was available was "South Afrikkan Ginger Beer" at $2.00 a bottle which I refused to pay the price for. The man was chanting "Sout aaffraka geenga beer" then he changed to "Sout
aaffraka geenga beer, only one left" it was late and out of desperation I parted with $2 for the South Afrikkan Ginger Beer, the bottle was John Kars Bengal brand ginger beer made in Detroit as stated above which cost about 2 bucks a case at the time.
