The old Free Press magazine ran an article about Hamtramck one time in which the author raved about a bar selling Red, White & Blue beer for the price of three for a dollar. Those were the days, my friend.

$2.50 pitchers of Coors, and Killians or Leinenkugel's at Mitch's on M/W and Scorekeeper's on Thurs. in Ann Arbor. Wayne State needs an ultra-cheap student bar...that would make people live on campus.

Majestic is good, though.

Mackinaw - agreed. someplace with pitchers under $3 that you could walk to would be huge for on-campus life. then perhaps some other bars might follow suit?

Wow! Looks like inflation hasn't hit Ann Arbor in a while. Those are the same prices from ten years ago!

Please nothing similar to Mitch's or Scorekeepers. That can stay in Ann Arbor.

"Millers" is Michiganese for "Miller".

Yeah Erikd,

and the part that cracks me up is how Michigan people pluralize the singular chains but we makes names like Big Lots singular (Big Lot). WTF? :-)

LOL @ ErikD...

I'm not sweating the higher beer prices - this is a byproduct of what is now really the inevitable change. You want the neighborhood to get nicer and better - well this will be an occasional side effect.

Everywhere else in the world, their "downtown-ish" corridors are usually the most expensive. Most bars I go to charge $4-5 for a beer, anyway.

So...in the interest of fairness...if we are to bash Union Street for their Miller lite prices, we must praise their monday special...

$12 BOTTLES of wine. That's incredibly cheap for a restaurant.

Also...as much as I love the Bronx (had a tremendous burger with a high life on Friday) its not exactly like they have a lot of overhead there.

The places are completely different. Let's stick to comparing apples.

They are just taking advantage of you because you are drunk (LOL). Don't go there. Take your friends and go elsewhere. They'll figure it out. Go to The Cass Cafe. There are so many other places to go. I don't know about The Bronx. I'd be afraid of running in to a serial murderer. Don't be ripped off. Buy a six-pack and take it, and your friends, home. Better party anyway.

annie -- if i remember correctly, the bottomless mimosas are $12, which, if you're going to take advantage of them being bottomless, is a good deal..

I may be wrong, but I 'm pretty sure you only get mimosas for $12 dollars if you buy the buffet. I think it was $18 bucks for the buffet. $30 total for brunch.

Back to my post: It is what it is. I was just a little surprised at her reasoning - the "we're no longer Cass Corridor" remark.

There's other places drink.

If you think that's expensive, try the Hudson Bar in Manhattan. One of the funkiest, most interesting bar experiences I've ever had. Feeling a bit cash poor, I ordered a Miller Lite, but instead got a $12 beer. Oh, wait, it was a Miller Lite.

I guess it's all relative, but I just don't see a $5 Miller unreasonable, nor $17 for a fish & chips dinner. The place seems to always draw a good crowd, so they must be doing something right. If you want to get drunk for cheap, buy a case and invite a few friends over. If you want a dining-out experience, you're going to pay what the owner values that experience at. I love Union Street, and would go more often if I lived a little closer...

Last weekend I took the lady out to dinner at J. Alexanders. The total tab was about $100 after tip - not including the drinks we purchased at the bar while waiting for a table. We had an appetizer, soup, salad and our entrees, all of which were exceptional. Was it expensive? Absolutely. But the service, preparation and ambience left me satisfied that it was well worth it. I only wish I could go more often - as I sit here eating a hot pocket.

Jhartmich, screw that pompous "Mid-Town" crap! Grab a 40 in a brown paper bag and call it "Skid Row", as a real Detroiter would do.

I used to work for Red Lobster. I left because their food quality took such a dump. I watched it go downhill quickly the 6 years I worked there.

Cheap bear with good service and eccentric clients, by far Temple Bar.
$.75 draft of Milwaukee's Best, free wifi, and reasonably priced shots. Tell George the owner that Christina was thinking about him if you stop in.

which incidentally is the going rate for many of the microbrews they have on tap if memory serves

why the hell would you go to union street, with their beer selection, and get a miller lite anyways?

Every time I drive by the Temple Bar I always wonder if it is closed for good or vacant or what? The surrounding area looks worse than Grozny, so not sure about parking.

There's always Michigan Ave - plenty of bars, good food - Friday fish fries at the Gaelic League and
cheap prices for beer.

The problem isn't completely the fact that the beer is $5, but that you would even think of drinking Miller Lite. It's water in a brown bottle.

By the way, someone mentioned Leininkugels. Fantastic beer and they are now at the Jow for the rest of the season. Nice.....nice...
