Perhaps I missed this in a previous thread (skimmed a forum search), but does anyone know what's going to happen with Lafayette Blvd once the Greektown Casino construction is complete? Is the road going to travel under the Casino, cease being a blvd and turn into a 2 lane street with a jog around, or is this another terminated street resulting in another bizarre transit grid interruption? This was the morning topic at work. Thanks in advance for any info.

Until they decide it's a terror threat and petition the city to close Lafayette.

unless they are going to cantilever the building out over the road, I imagine it's going to look a little ridiculous having building supports rising out of the middle of the road median.

They haven't closed Larned under Cobo or the Millender center. They haven't closed the lodge under Cobo or Atwater under Hart Plaza. It's not like this is anything new in Detroit.

Terror threat? I guess we need to close all tunnels across America now. What's next? The end of professional sports because too many Americans crowded together is ripe for a terror attack?

quit already

Raptor, the building skin is already up.....with supports in the median....not sure what you mean? Have you seen it within the past 6 months?

I'm surprised at how window-less the new Lafayette section is. I imagined windows at least where the Peep comes close in passing it just prior to the Greektown Station.

Casinos usually have few window. I helps prevents people from getting an idea of how much time they are spending there. How many clocks have you noticed?

That's exactly why casinos on the riverfront never made much sense to me.

Casinos in the middle of the desert = good.
Casinos with a view = bad

Granted, casinos don't have windows. However, their hotels do, hundreds of them. Moreover, every guest wants a room with a view.

...don't see how Lafayette is in the way of the new casino

Lafayette is down to one lane and one way now because of the construction.

The below link is a few months old. The building structure is now starting to expand onto the road

They are staying in the same building, and the second floor is going to extend over Lafayette which will eventually be re-opened for traffic.

It's pretty obvious what they're doing if you see it yourself, even without a siteplan. I'll try to take some pictures during lunch tomorrow.

Just think of the temp casino as going from behind Trappers Alley to Lafayette... whereas the expanded permanent casino will go from behind Trappers Alley to 1/2 across (above) Lafayette... which is a wide boulevard at that point.

It appears that there are 3 levels above the street. I am sure one of those will se service areas, but is that going to be their meeting space, or will that be included in the hotel tower.

Anybody ever drive under the Millender Center (or even the bridge between Compuware and its parking deck)? Chances are that it will be most similar to that setup...

Warren: thanks for the pic! didn't realize they had that much complete already. Last couple times I was down there was during the auto show and winter blast. Both times were at night and I was dealing with a girlfriend who was driving and freaking out about finding a parking spot since our original garage was full. Needless to say, there wasn't much time afforded to gawking at the scenery :-(

Thanks Warrenite84!

I don't remember seeing an architectural rendering of the casino expansion over Lafayette, only the hotel/garage. Is this expansion going to continue to have a red brick skin with a historic feel to it, like the temporary casino did?

Will it be real red brick... or just big concrete panels that are molded and colored to look like brick, similar to what's currently being used?

what is currently on the structure is not concrete molded to look like brick. it is actual brick that is very thin, set into concrete panels. this gives the impression of actual brick while being panelized (another example is ford field). concrete casted to look like brick would look that way (for an example, see the parking structure for the casino next to the boydell building/niki's pizza).

my impression is that it will also use this process. it's much more cost effective that laying actual brick. actually, i'd be very surprised if we ever see actual brick on large scale projects at all anymore.

I can always tell the difference when it's not real, full brick. It just doesn't look as good.
