Lafayette

This isn't even a question, nor should it be up for debate.

I thought Genie's closed. They were on Conant & Caniff, but I thought I saw a for lease sign in the window. Did they move to a different locale?

Grilled with skin on franks.
Lafayette, the second Coney place in the world.
I was baptized there before my first Tiger game.
In LA THE place for dogs is Pink's, http://www.pinkshollywood.com/ but it doesn't match Lafayette or American for Coney's
Hungry anyone?

Years ago I used to work at 8 and southfield and we used to go to a coney island all the time that I think was one or two miles south and possibly one mile east or west. Does anyone know which Coney Island I am referring to? Is it still there?

No coneys out here in Denver. Always have parents bring chili from Detroit when they come. Right now, any coney sounds good.

It seems that at one time I read something about the Detrola plant. I want to say it was on Grand River. Perhaps Jjaba knows. I have not yet run across one of their radios. I have a keen interest in photography. It was the Detrola line of cameras and my SWD upbringing that led me to choose the "Detrola" name.

A quick bit of research concerning the detrola factory brought an answer that surprised me. I had no idea that the detrola factory was in my neighborhood. The Plant was at Beard & Chatfield. I grew up on Lafayette between Beard & Green. Like the ride I enjoy so much, it is a "small world after all"

I always choose Lafayette just for the ambiance. I love the authentic "retro" interior, and even the god-awful basement restrooms. It just has a great feel to it. I used to be a fan of Zorba's at Pennsylvania and Fort Street (now a turn lane). It had 4 booths and 8 stools. The new Zorba's has that horrible "family restaurant" look. Give me a greasy spoon look any day.

Do any of the old timers on the board recall a coney joint on the south side of Plymouth Rd. west of Southfield.? (near K Mart). I have been on a 40 year quest to find a coney to match those. Sorry, there are none even remotely close to those. these listed here (those i've tried) are all not bad but don't compare. Now I must try Duly's.

a message to all the owners of coney joints around town. To make a proper coney, you don't simply chop an onion in half and throw it on there. You must MINCE the onion.

Detrola, Cool, I don't recall the address we had on Lafayette, I just remember we rented an upstairs flat from Old Man Gerky lol.
Had some friends a little older then you that lived there, Ronnie V. Tony A and "Bootsie"
Any bells ringing there?

sorry to everyone else for the slight threadjack

I lived nextdoor to Ronnie V. I knew Tony A. "Bootsie" Wow, Now that is a name that takes me back.

To get the thread back on track. Since when does Duly's boil their hotdogs? The last I remember, like Lafayette, Duly's grills their dogs right in the front window. They then keep them warm in a steam warmer. The thing about Duly's is the incredible amount of chili they smother their dogs in. Get xtra onions and oh man, Heaven.

I went to Lafayette for the first time today & of course topped off the experience by maneuvering my 6'3" tall self down the stairs to the bathroom. The coneys were great & I walked away impressed...what an institution. Other than Lipuma's, there is a small coney island on Walton Blvd. in Pontiac on the corner of N. Telegraph that would have to be one of the best in Oakland County. The name escapes me at the moment.

There is now a Pinks in Las Vegas, too. Good stuff but nowhere near as good as a Detroit style coney. I heard a place opened in west Dearborn, I think its called Red Hots, serving all styles of dogs. Anybody been there?

Too funny LOL, I can't even remember how many times my folks have sent me Vernors over the years (16 years on Oahu). Me and my wife will get the package and tell each other OK lets ration the cans and next thing you know they're Gonesville. A can of Vernors is worth its weight in gold out here, especially to someone who uses a hand to tell people where they'er from!

I'd gladly trade some Vernors for some of that 80 degree weather you're having on Oahu. I remember sitting on the beach in front of the Royal Hawaiian in winter reading the paper and checking the temp back in the D and just laughing. Well, I'm not laughing now! But at least I have all the Vernors, Faygo, Better Made chips and Saunders fudge I can handle. But...the best omelette and pancakes I ever had were at Eggs N Things in Waikiki. Been there?

Alfie1a,

I grew up in the area from 1975 - 1986. It was just called " Coney Island". There were always semi-trucks parked in front of the Coney Island. They had some of the best foot-long Coney Islands in the city. Also, Evelethcdenver, I live in the Denver area as well. They couldn't spell Coney Island out here. Just about everything that's not a chain like McDonalds is a Mexican place. I miss Detroit's food.

Just ate there last night after the boat show!
Lipuma's in Rochester is damn good too with my favorite-Chicago dog. Does anyone know who else makes a great Chicago style hot dog??? It's on a poppyseed? bun with 2 pickle slices, onions, relish, mustard, hot peppers, and some sprinkled pepper. YUM!

That place on Plymouth west of Southfield is still there, but who knows if the coneys are still good? I just noticed the place last night on my way to drop off a vehicle for storage, must get back there soon to try the coneys. A friend worked there in the early 70s, and as I recall, they WERE good, even if he cooked them.

When I worked at Domino's during my college years, they came out with some speciality salads, IE Caesar, Greek, etc.

At the corporate level, somebody decided that Greek salads wouldn't go over well in Michigan, so they would not advertise Greek salads in local corporate paid advertisements.

I told my manager that was the most ill-informed thing I had ever heard of, considering there is a Coney Island serving greek food on every corner of metro Detroit. So she went ahead and ordered the ingredients for it anyway, and we offered them. They were the most popular salad that we sold by far. About three months later, corporate decided they would market the Greek salads here.

Luckycar--speaking of eateries in Pontiac, I am eager to try the Bronx Deli at 226 S. Telegraph; I heard about it a few months ago from the president of the Pontiac Chamber of Commerce, and it was mentioned in the Oakland Press; there is a very positive 'Nomadic Nibbler' review of it today in the OP Marquee section.

Lipuma's in Rottenchester always has a line, way out the door in nice weather.
Plus they have a deck overlooking the mighty Paint Creek! (Across from the Yacht club).
