Several cities across the country have been creating statues of TV characters that were set in their cities. Chicago did Bob Newhart, Minneapolis did Mary Tyler Moore, Milwaukee is doing the Fonz. Who should Detroit do? Tim the Tool Man?

What about a Robocop in the middle of Jefferson?

(Now that'd be scary!)

Tim Allen!? What? Ew. I don't care what other cities do, we're not a TV town, we're a music town. So I say bronze statues of Motown artist, Kid Rock, Eminem and the White Stripes...all are ten times the talent of Tim Allen.

He's the only one that had a actual Detroit Based series. I completely agree, a Motown statue would be better and Detroit is a Music town.

Jack White>>>>>>>>>>>>>Eminem/Kid Rock, neither of which were born or raised in the D.

None deserve a statue IMO.

Stevie Wonder or Diana Ross perhaps..

If I were to pick someone from the 'burbs. Madonna would be my choice over E or KR, and if it were Michigan, Bob Seger, Iggy Pop, Ted Nugent, or even Grand Funk made their mark in the music scene at one time or another.

Are there statues of the Big 3 founders (GM and Chrysler) around the city?

I'm pretty sure there already is, but it would seem like a more feasible idea of a statue to me before the rest of them.

"I say we bronze Kwame's salami."

It already has more than 15 minutes of fame.

How about the "Peacemaker" in front of the RenCen?

I didn't know Col. Potter was from Detroit! I'll have to remember that next time I'm watching TV Land.

The ICP would be cool, The group was formed in Delray. They do tell all their fans to drink Faygo.

Detroit is long overdue for a statue of the most famous bluesman to call this city home -- John Lee Hooker.

why should it have anything to do with him?

I think we need to have an entire street of sculptures dedicated to Detroit's non-motown musical legacy

stooges with iggy stepping into the crowd
MC-5
John Lee Hooker
etc.
etc.
maybe a street dedicated to each genre - rock, blues, jazz, gospel

Putting up a statue of Robocop would be seriously awesome, though. Like, legitimately cool, in the sense that the *shudder* "cool cities" initiative tries and fails to get.

A 30 foot statue of the original Crow movie character (Brandon Lee) so visitors see a fictional character whose movie allegedly set in the D, depicted the bleak rainy noir landscape and criminal activity the city is infamous for.

And with regard to the idea of a Tim Allen statue, that would work better in Royal Oak than in Detroit itself. One, because, well, the show was set there, and two, because that particular style of Midwest kitsch (and I speak as someone who loves Midwest kitsch) fits in better in the satellite towns than in the city. Detroit itself doesn't need kitsch, it needs weird and badass.

After wasting time looking about, I don't think there is a definitive setting for Home Improvement, other than a fairly affluent Detroit suburb.

"I believe it was set in West Bloomfield."

Sources say the name of the town was Keego Harbor Heights, and on the show, it's mentioned that they live 20 miles from DD and along Woodward.

I'd say the first rocker to get a statue should be Seger, and that right outside Cobo Arena...with a framed copy of the album Live Bullet.

He seriously represented Detroit when he was on Leno last year. Confessed his love of the town, and was midwest honest.

For Motown? I'd say we have all the artists sorta standing on Berry Gordy's head for eternity. Heh, I just checked the spelling of his name and discovered we share a birthday.

I'm 53 now and like Kid rock at least for his variety and sincerity.
I'm WAY over Seger and Led Zeppelin and hope they move on.
2+2 is on my mind).( bob - remember being from 71'in the cube van? Rochester.)
ICP are from the Motor City and could use a boost.
I am not up on the current Von Bondies or such, but I remember the Grande Ballroom,Palladiam and Eastown days.
Mountain,Doors,and Sweathog anybody?
How about Tea, Captain Fishhook and his all Night Crawlers?
or King Crimsom? or the original Emerson,Lake and
Palmer?

Although not TV Characters per se... how about someone who was born here... Charles Lindberg!

Or (once the price of copper comes down)... a bronze statue of Aretha Franklin!

But if it's a TV star... how about Lilly Tomlin or Gilda Radnor.
