There has been mention of this for a while, but it looks like it is becoming more concrete.

Good for kids in the ghettos of Detroit who are educationally starving for Mathematics and Science. But bad for DPS for it could lose some more students to the proposal EVIL CHARTER SCHOOLS.

I sense your cynicism Danny. LOL

This is an excellent idea IMO and I'm all for it. DPS has had their many, MANY problems and they don't seem to know how to fix any of them. Charter schools aren't the answer, but a school dedicated to math and science in the Cultural Area... can't get better than that.

I went to the DSC during the summer they had the Titanic exhibit there. I believe admission was $20-something dollars. After paying admission, those of us with tickets had to wait until the previous group had moved thru the exhibit. When we were allowed into the exhibit our paying group was complemented with a group of kids who had been bussed to the DSC. They were undersupervised and were soon setting off alarms protecting the collection of artifacts on display. Security guards had to be brought in to stop the children from running around from one display to the next. It was obvious they had no appreciation for what was on display nor showed any respect for those of us who had paid to see the Titanic exhibit. That was the last time I've been to the DSC.

AWESOME news. At a time when similar museums are going away (COSI), Detroit's is expanding. Furthermore, university prep is a great program, and it will be great to have a school there. It adds a new dimension to that neighborhood, a schooling option for new residents who wish to live in midtown with their families, and will clearly have the advantage of an entire museum right next door.

Big props to the planners of this whole thing.

They should really make the Science Center 21 and up. This is an Adult only society! NO KIDS ALLOWED!

Expect more charter schools in Detroit in the coming years. A provision in the charter school legislation calls for when DPS loses status as a Class A School District (falls below enrollment of 100,000) it raises the cap statewide on the number of charter schools allowed. Hopefully, this will lead to more unique schools like this one.
