Flipping through the stations caught Headline News talking about the Michigan primary. The host-Glenn Beck mentioned he ate at the top of the GM building a couple months ago and thought Detroit was on fire when he saw the oil refineries and parts of Detroit look like Baghdad.

...which time the waiter cut off Beck from the wine list.

I wish people would go into more detail w/ the comparison analyses in order to hold themselves more accountable and credible.

Glenn Beck is a condescending little jerk. Mouth's moving and nothing is coming out. Seriously, I watched him the other night, what a waste of video tape.

Good...it wasn't just me that thought Beck was a prick. Come on...Detroit-Baghdad, at least be original. The guest made some good points about the tax structure in Michigan, but no reason to give Detroit a low blow.

Well if you're looking down along the east and west riverfront it looks pretty ruined, but if you take a 360-degree look, you'd be insane to draw such a conclusion. Clearing he was trying to get random viewers in the American heartland to slap their knee and enjoy a laugh with him.

Do I sense a Detroityes letter writing campaign?

We should actually just draft a letter template, and every time one of these news organizations makes one of these harsh off base comparisons we fill in a few details, and blast’em with emails.

That is a better idea than whining and snotting up every time some no-account smart-ass, or fictional television character, makes a nasty remark about Detroit, a city which has many good points, but has done much to earn its reputation as a god-forsaken wasteland of squalor, crime, and murder.

Look at the river view at the top of the page. That is probably close to the exact view that this dumbass was looking at when he made the comment. Does that look like Baghdad or Beirut? There are oil refineries with flames coming out of the stacks all over the world. That is really a sign of prosperity, not degradation. They even have them just outside of Venice.

Of course there is plenty of wasteland, prairie, whatever you want to call it in Detroit. But it is not really what one sees from the top of the Ren Cen.

I agree, go the the Coach Insignia often, the view certainly doesnt look like a burning Baghdad. Most of the times I am hearing visitors say how good it looks with the cool older buildings downtown and the waterway,, hmm

Someone once said that Detroit is BAGHDAD! and Michigan is the new IRAQ! and the Black folks in both Detroit and Michigan folks are the new INSURGENTS. The rest of the world would ignore this state and this city, but along time ago Detroit and Michigan were the car and music makers and the dreamers or the dream.

The world needs to stop laughing of our calamities and start helping our Great Lakers State before it would before it becomes an instant memory the fades into a myth.

Someone's obviously never taken a trip on the Chicago Skyway. Or the NJ Turnpike.

Detroit is different and takes a lot of heat simply because it is a predominately black city—the biggest one in the nation. All things being considered it shouldn’t exist at all, given the flight of the city’s tax base since the 1950s and accelerating after the 1967 riot through to the present. This exodus includes middle and upperclass African Americans who leave for the same reasons whites fled before them. And true enough Detroit has its problems, but so does every other big city in the world. What too many Metro Detroiters lack is sophistication. They would rather run and hide in what they perceive as the safety of the suburbs, than to move into the city and along with others of goodwill finally pitch-in and help to turn the place around.

A snippet about Beck on Wiki:

"Beck is a self-described reformed alcoholic and drug addict. In the aftermath of those three family tragedies, Beck said he used "Dr. Jack Daniels" and heavy drugs to cope. He and his first wife divorced amid his struggle with substance abuse."

I believe everything in that snippet except the "reformed" part. A Rush wanna-be without the money or audience. Why is anybody even bothering to even quote him?
