About 15.9 million tourist visited the Metro area and the city. They spent a total of 4.8 Billion dollars.

16 Million seems a bit high

I also wonder if the Superbowl XL had a lot to do with it. I wonder is 2007 will be higher!

Are we counting people who bought a cinna-bun at Metro?

Only if they could find one. It's been a disappointing journey for me. I think the nearest ones are Northland (and maybe Oakland).

I was a tourist to your fair city in 2007 and I will be back again in 2008. Coming from Chicago, we will see commericals and news ads about Detroit. The casinos are a definite draw. Atlantic City exists because of casinos and for anyone who has been to Atlantic City, the city itself is not the draw. Detroit has a lot of architectural gems, mueseums, and just plain history. A lot of us from Chicago visit The Henry Ford, but now they will venture further down 94.

Remember we're talking about a year that had Super Bowl XL and the unexpected World Series, plus that number includes all business travelers, families visiting from out of town, etc.

Hopefully, 2007 was similar to 2006 and not lower. This year should be interesting with the permanent casinos finally up and running, NCAA basketball regionals and the PGA Championship.

Do they count the auto show as well? That adds another 700 or 800 thousand to the number if so.

I don't think the Auto Show attracts that many tourists. That's the typical range of total attendance for the run of the show.

I believe, the auto show does attract a fair amount of tourists. There are many people from Toronto area that drive down for it. They have articles in the paper there every year on where to stay , things to do while here etc.. I also know several people from as far as Florida that try to make it here ( they are definite car lovers) for it when they can. Several have said to me that they want to see the Casinos and the DIA while here. It seems that we are finally putting together the necessary elements to draw tourists.

I am sure that people from the Windsor area are counted as tourists. That alone pumps up Metro Detroit's tourism numbers.

That's my point Iheartthed. That number might be artificially inflated by considering auto show goers as "tourists".

It works the same for Windsor. Every American car that stops over on their way to N.Y., Toronto, Niag. Falls, etc. gets counted in their tourist numbers. I have to laugh when I read some of the numbers. Meanwhile, if I'm down by the riverfront I overhear people saying, "Dad, where are we and what's that place over there?"

All that aside, I can vouch that I know of several people in my area (Toronto) who have visited the auto show in the last few years as well as the Dream Cruise. I also have several friends planning trips to Red Wing games now that tickets are available, so there is an upside to weak ticket sales. Word-of-mouth advertising (besides me) is promoting the D !

Oh okay, I doubt that they would be so simplistic in the method of calculating, but who knows? Even still that's only a fraction of the supposed visitors to the region.

I think the number is probably inflated by day trippers. People who might come from near areas of Ontario or Ohio, and people who come from the nearby areas in Michigan. For instance, is someone from Flint or Toledo considered a tourist?

^^^^ if they did include the auto show patrons- that's only like what 300-400k? which really doesn't move the scale that much when looking at 16mil

It's great to hear, but honestly, it's just as important to get suburbanites who never go to the city to re-awaken and learn to like Detroit again. I remember a headline during the SB XL festivities that said "tourists in their own town," and that sums up many metro Detroiters, still.
