Good find CL and excuse me for renaming your title from OF INTEREST TO THOSE INTERESTED.

This is semi-big news for all of us who have read Sugrue's book, quite possibly the important book on Detroit. I didn't want it to escape notice.

When asked for a Detroit book to read Sugrue's "Origins of the Urban Crises" is on my 'must read' list.

It must be quite interesting for Sugrue, who grew up in Detroit, to come back home for a year.

That book came up lately in a thread. That is a very very good book. If everybody read this book, we'd have a lot less threads where people are arguing over how Detroit came to be where it is. It really shows how all the different threads unravelled, and there is not just one defining reason.

Neat- thanks for posting, CL! I just hope he gives more talks than the one mentioned in the article.

Great. That is a prolific academic to have a WSU. I had the pleasure of speaking to him once last fall after reading his book, which I think has some very valuable chapters.

I had hoped that he could visit Detroit often or maybe even come live here, which might perhaps lead to a re-appraisal of the Detroit situation. Hopefully he'll write another book about how Detroit has improved, and the work left to be done.

Erratum...he is not here for the year.

Tom Sugrue writes, "Thanks for the note. Unfortunately, I'm just a visiting scholar for 3 days. But that's three great days in the Motor City. Best, Tom"

Well darn, there goes the queues to get into one of his classes.

lol seriously, if he was teaching I'd be in that class in a heartbeat. I wish I would have paid attention to Wayne.edu before he spoke, I JUST finished reading his book a couple weeks ago.
