Definitely doesn't look like demo work to me, thank God. Of course, if it were up to Ilitch, people would be paying $20 to park their cars there.

Over the years the people that have owned it have kept up the building. In the past they have done roof and waterproofing work also. Unlike their neighbor across the street, they are actually taking care of their investment.

That's good to hear. Upkeep of investment property will definitely attract potential buyers. With all of of the revival going on downtown, it is good to know that the Whitney may have a future here in Detroit.

The pictures of the lobby I see show it in perfect condition. Just like the day it was closed up. Hopefully this will be one less empty building surrounding Grand Circus.

They better keep the cool old sing on the roof.

"Over the years the people that have owned it have kept up the building."

Except for a significant period last year or so when the building was open to trespass, and people were running around vandalizing it.

here's more pix from today... work is definitely being done and it's not just in sealing the building because you can see in these pix that columns of bricks are being stripped down and replaced with fresh columns of clean white bricks... this building is going to be stunning again very soon... check out the pix

I assume they were working midnights to avoid hitting people with the falling brick pieces? Maybe now that they got those down, they can lay the new brick without fear of hitting one of the 8 to 12 people that walk down Woodward daily.

They were working on it on the scaffolding with a big light at midnight Thursday. It looked like they were replacing bricks.

I went to a show last night at the Detroit Opera House, and spotted crews working on along the roofline with spotlights around 6:30PM, and the spotlights still on around 10:15 or 10:30. Today, on the People Mover, I noticed that the roofline scaffholding (of whatever its called), is not only on the Washington Blvd side, but the Woodward Side as well, and maybe on the back, too. Any further speculation about what they are doing?
