Let it burn down. Keep the fire trucks and fire engines available to places that are either habitable (is that a word) or near ones that are.

I wonder if any fires in other places had a slower response time due to the additional attention for this neglected hulk.

It doesn't sound like the structural soundness of the building was affected. Still, it's unfortunate that this happens. If these incidents continue to happen, there will be more and more calls to demolish the structure, which I really hope does not happen.

I recognize that right now there is no realistic rehabilitation plan, but I really hate to see this building die.

"Let it burn down."

MCS ? How the hell would that thing even burn down ? It would just make a stinky smoky mess for awhile.

The MCS burning down? No way! Light a hundred bonfires on each floor, don't put them out, let them burn for a month straight and you'll still be left with a building that is structurally sound, maybe just a little darker in color.

You could probably even fly a passenger airplane loaded with jet fuel into the side of it and just watch the pulverized plane shoot through the windows on the other side, leaving the building intact and sound.

I agree, though, call the fire trucks off and let it gain some more character!

Point was that DFD should not risk their lives, efforts or the homes of residents to put out a fire in a structure the owner does not give a shit about.

Until Maroun does something DFD should not be wasting resources or endangering firefighters since a fire there will have no ramifications on any other buildings.

Wouldn't want to give Maroun grounds for suing the city, would you? As long as he pays the taxes the city is obligated to service his properties, though they could also enforce codes and regulations, too.

Do you think that Maroun would want to piss off Kwame and his mom. Once that relationship ends he is much, much, much worse off.

I can’t believe people have so many negative feelings about that building.

Its empty, but it is a work of art.

Why tear it down? We will certainly never have something that magnificent in its place.

We should not bitch to tear it down; we should bitch about the lack of security. Or that it has been allowed to rot and crumble, meanwhile its owner sits on a fortune, and doesn’t spend shit to protect it.

The building should have basic protection from the elements, and vandals, it is part of our shared history, and it is irreplaceable.

I agree, Dan and Rhymes. I don't live in Detroit, but I still find the building inspiring, and worth saving. I do acknowledge that the city will have no money to do anything about it anytime soon, but the hope is that a private developer might recognize some kind of value in the site and at least preserve some of it.

It is owned by a private citizen so the city can't shop it to private developers. The city is also spending resources to put out fires in a building the owner does not care about.

If the overworked DFD resources could have went to stop a home or business fire just a few minutes quicker it would be much more beneficial for the owners of those places.

Until Maroun does even minor mantenance the city should fine him on a daily basis and list this property as lower priority when it comes to DFD responding to the numerous calls they face.

I find quick response to fires in inhabited homes much more inspiring than limited city resources sent to a property whose owner cares nothing of the building. Same would go for any neglected structure in the city that doesn't potentially cause other structures to go up in flames.

It appears that the city cares more about the building than the owner.

They said on the news that a homeless person set a fire in an oil drum. The fire was contained to the oil drum.

Hi Ryan,

Awesome pics! I am always thrilled to see new ones, though I'm sad to hear the condition of the building has gotten worse than ever before. Were you able to bring in your tripod this time?

I hope to see the inside myself some day!

When I was in Detroit a couple of months ago I have absolutely amazed by this building. It is an awesome site. Detroit should be ashamed of itself for letting this treasure sit and rot. I am sure there is political garbage to go along with it. The building as so much potential. Why has not anything been done? An office, lofts, hotel/casino, mall, anything? I am seriously surprised that someone has not tried to develope it. Hopefully one day it will be.

"Why has not anything been done?"

Because a man named Manny Maroun owns it, and being Manny Maroun means being able to do whatever you want, as long as you don't forget to contribute to the Kilpatricks' war chest.

I suppose the city could condemn the building. In that case, though, demolition would most likely result, and most of us do not want to see that, either.

I heard there's not enough dynamite in the state of Michigan to blow this building up.

If Corkown really started to come back. that would do more to raise the chances of something happening with this building than anything else.
