Broadcasting from a Chrysler plant instead of the Riverfont Towers again, they are bound to be talking about the "bad Detroit" and not all of the relatively more optimistic news of today and the last few days. |

I was impressed with their mention all of the developments outside of the auto industry. Casinos, and an interview with Dan Gilbert over the Quicken Move. |

Gilbert got some air time. He was looking good. (But did Erin the reporter roll her eyes afterward? Maybe she was just distracted by a voice in her earphone. Didn't look very professional.) |

I guess that it does make some sense for the reporters to have been sceptical of these latest Detroit moves. At least they have brought into the broadcast many other Detroit stories. |

The news out of the Big 3 has been largely positive lately. One of the absolute best things I've heard recently was the morale report from Ford - their employees' morale registered higher than it ever has since 1999. That's one of those intangibles that speaks volumes. |

They have reason for morale I think. The Mustang, the new Focus, the Fusion, they are all sharp looking cars. Some of the best stuff I've seen from the big three in awhile, considering each vehicle in its own class. Also props to GM on the new Malibu, looks great. |

Yah, the end of the coverage made it seem like the Detroit region was a leader in understanding the new, knowledge-based economy. I was impressed by the coverage of issues. The dialogue made is seem like Detroit was making an honest effort to compete in the new economy, and that our area is still a major contributor to the world economics. |

What's really impressive is that the Ford morale survey was sent out in September - well before the contract was negotiated. I imagine with several plants that were slated to close now staying open, that number would be even higher now. By no means is the work done but it's good to see some progress and so much optimism among the people who make the cars. |

Very impressive. The Dodge Rams were flying off the line and Brian Williams was right there. After a story of 3 minutes, he noted three more full-sized Detroit iron fully loaded dreamboats came along. He told the audience we make dreams come true. He did Detroit right. jjaba liked it. jjaba, Fan of NBC tonight. |

One thing I noticed was the emphasis on how Chrysler was now owned by an 'outside firm', a 'financial company' as if that alone was going to turn it around. I didn't really like the insinuations in that. Also, the part on Detroit economics that gave the change in number of autoworkers made it seem like all the jobs lost were due to quality decline an dmarket share loss, with no mention of technology and manufacturing efficiencies. It also got me wishing that the Ford family would buy back enough stock to be in control again and wondering why they haven't - now would be the time, before the turnaround really takes off. I was impressed with the new ad I saw for the Escape Hybrid. (Message edited by lilpup on November 14, 2007) |

Yeah they did mention that most of the decline in US auto industries was due to a perceived lack of quality (they also did mention that foreign vehicles seem to get better mileage). |

"It also got me wishing that the Ford family would buy back enough stock to be in control again" trust me, the Fords, with their "special" stock are in control. if they weren'r Mullally wouldn't be the guy over there right now and nasser would have driven the company into the ash heap of history |

Even with their 'special' stock they technically aren't in control and recently there was an attempt to do away with their 'special' stock, which would really undercut their influence. Given that they already lost the Ford Foundation I'd hate to see the company control get messed up, too. |

Ray1936 tells it like it tis. He sounds like Lee Iococoa back in the day, talking about Fords as Royals. The foreign producers did move to the USA to produce vehicles and they do sell a product line many people desire. The San Antonio Toyota truck lines are popular down there. Go to Japan and see what they produce for their own people. Yup, little rice rockets nobody would consider in the wide-open USA. Now jjaba reads that the Silicon Valley wants to lead the way in electric cars. Hopefully, the hybrids will hold for Ford, expecially when oil prices ease again. As for GM, remember the Chinese love Buicks, and won't ever forget the Japanese atrocities during the 1940s. GM still sells a lotta products overseas. jjaba. |

The NBC News did a last minute juggle of their lineup from Detroit to fit in the Quicken news and the related interviews. |

Additionally, Ford's "Value Enhancement Plan" of 2000 stipulates that a majority vote of Class B shareholders is required to "merge or consolidate with or into another corporation ... dispose of all or substantially of our property and assets ... transfer any assets to another corporation ... voluntarily liquidate or dissolve." [source] As long as all of the Ford family members remain "on the same page", they are in firm control of the Ford Motor Company. |

Cool. I wonder if people in other cities get as excited as we do when their town gets national attention. Detroit...still the worlds largest small town! |

I know that Mikeg, but recently there was an attempt by some shareholders to make the Class B stock no different than the rest, thereby reducing the family's voting strength. |

I believe that was a shareholder proposal, which anyone can have added to the agenda of the annual meeting. The Ford family, between their Class B and regular common stock ownership, controls at least 42% of the votes on any shareholder proposal. They would surely vote their shares against that proposal, which means that 86% of the outstanding shares of common stock would have to be voted in favor for it to pass, which is highly unlikely.
