*sorry if its a repost, but I couldn't find anything in search**

Beginning October 25, free passes to 25 metro area museums will be available for check-out at Main Library and every branch library in Detroit. DPL customers in good standing will be able to check-out a free admission pass, good for 7 days, and admitting either 2 or 4 people depending on the museum. Participating museums include the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Historical Museum, Ford Rouge Factory Tour, the Henry Ford Estate, Cranbrook Museums for Science and for Art, University of Michigan Exhibit Museum of Natural History, the Howell Nature Center, and many more. MAP is a partnership between public libraries and museums in Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, Livingston, St. Clair and Macomb counties.

The program is sponsored by Macy's, the Library of Michigan Foundation, and the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan. Macy's underwrites expenses for producing promotional materials used by and in DPL libraries as well as print and media advertising for the program. MAP begins October 25, and continues through October, 2008. If successful, it will be considered for a second year.

Nice idea - I hope that the people that take advantage of this still donate some money to the museums.

On a side note - one of the dumber things I have heard in awhile. Did anyone know that the DIA discounts the price to be a member if you live 50 miles away or greater. So if you are a city resident and already have taxes go to support the DIA you will pay more to be a member than someone that lives 50 miles away.

I take it that this "Museum Adventure Pass" is not limited to the CofD and that people in the suburbs can get one?

There are quite a few museum passes to check out at the South Lyon and Brighton libraries.

JT - not dumb, just Marketing 101. Once the 50-mile radius has been saturated with marketing & all who will join have joined where are more members found? A lower price is probably necessary to attract from a market so far away that its consumers are naturally disinclined toward membership. You see a variant of this in loss-leader offerings by retailers.

Understandable, though, why the emotional reaction is one of outrage. But will you also muster outrage for the Flint and Toledo Art Institutes upon whose markets the DIA is poaching? This business, pure and simple.
