Since we're only two weeks shy of Thanksgiving, I thought....why not list some good things about past and/or present Detroit:

Belle Isle
Rouge Park
Patton Pool
Edgewater Park
Swimmobile
Bookmobile
DSR reliability and service
Block Parties
Tigers
Lions
Wayne State University
Detroit Public Schools

......OK, maybe things are not what they used to be - so just share some good memories.

My old neighborhood , Littlefield between Vassar and St Martins . Looks almost as good as it did 40 years ago . Those houses were really built and most have been kept up very nicely .

Eric_c,

Where exactly is the "Financial District" in Detroit?

Very interesting. I ask since I haven't heard this neighborhood mentioned before. What types of businesses does the area contain?

Thanks. Q

It's basically the area near and to the west of the corner I mentioned. Along and west of Griswold downtown.

I thought it was fairly well-established. We're talkin Buhl Building, Ford Building, Marquette Building, Savoyard, etc.

Mackinaw,

I'm assuming you refer to the "Financial District" ? Near and to the west of the corner you mentioned?

Just wondering what types of jobs in finance are located there? Any major banks or significant jobs in finance, securities, investment bankers and trading floors like you see in a lot other major u.s. cities?

I'm very interested. Can't seem to find much online about Detroit's Financial District though.

Thanks again.

Yeah, Financial District is actually a stop along the People Mover route and is home to many of Detroit's major skyscrapers. Centered along Griswold between Jefferson and Michigan, the cross streets are Congress, Larned, Fort and Lafayette. Washington Boulevard is the western edge, Woodward is the eastern side.

All the mergers and games of musical offices have diluted the concentration and importance of the area, but most banks that serve Michigan have at least some presence.

Keep in mind, through the early '90s the area housed the HQs or main regional offices for National Bank of Detroit, Comerica, First National, Roney & Co., Olde Brokerage, Federal Reserve Branch as well as some other local banks.

The Detroit Stock Exchange was in the area in the early 20th century, too!

Here are some not mentioned yet ( I don't think).

Marygrove/ Mercy college(now part of udm) a beautiful campus setting. Also UofD's campus.

The Dexter/Linwood/Davison area.I know it has seen better days but all the old apt bldgs retain their elegance.

The ave of fashion_ Livernois and the surrounding neighborhood an interesting mix of styles.

Bakers_ it(bakers) has a history that many don't.

"I'm very interested. Can't seem to find much online about Detroit's Financial District though."

Wikipedia has a brief article on it. According to them, we still have one of the finest.

However, it has been better days. All of the HQ's that once resided there have either been absorbed into a bank elsewhere or crunched. It's basically now just a big banking center.

Everything else can be considered our Commercial District. You can say there's a Federal District (SW of Michigan and Cass), but it's pretty small at the time. Then there's the entertainment district that's bordered by Grand Circus Park, I-75, Cass (now), and I-75.

Financial District is a lot like the rest of CBD - empty and a shadow of what it once was (e.g. Savo's been gone for years - walk up & see for yourself). Re: work in the area - there are two good-sized agencies there, and some "hotel" offices for out-of-town shops.

... I'll take the ensuing bashing from the critics section, but, I think the best part of Detroit is its undeniable musical heritage which is the one thing which has not suffered one bit over the decades. Cass Corridor is a great place for good music. Greektown also. So is anyplace east or west side. You never need to go more than two miles to find good music. Aside from the obvious, we've produced some of the following aritists - John Lee Hooker, Elvin Jones, Frigid Pink, Cactus, and more or less made The Smiths popular during the industrial 80's... Marshall Crenshaw, Buckethead, Patti LaBelle, The Kingbee's, The Romantics, Was Not Was, Seduce, Destroy All Monsters, Elvis Hitler, Verve Pipe, Amboy Dukes, Rhythm Corp. And jeans and style, chicks of attitude, etc. There's no other place like it in the world.
