Anyone else notice the wet-dog smell last night downtown? I was on my way to the post office (and thinking maybe I needed a shower) when a woman stopped me and asked, "do you smell that, or am I crazy?" She was glad to find out she wasn't imagining it (or causing it!) either.
I've never experienced it before, and wondering if anyone has a clue what caused it. It wasn't a sewer smell, but a lot like a wet dog.

Could be worse. All over Windsor from downtown to Walkerville it's smelled like shit all week. I'm talking actual feces smell... Kind of like manure mixed with cat shit. It's faint but stinky. When I was out the other night I actually stopped and checked the bottom of my shoes as I thought I stepped in some...

I'd happily trade you for the wet dog...

I noticed it--assumed it was some kind of industrial stink brought to us courtesy of the strong southwest winds.

Who knows, it might be the same stink as in Windsor, mixed with some river rot and the usual downtown funk. I didn't smell it today though.

I smelled the same. A lightly-malty, organic smell. It seemed strongest from the New Center to the MGM. I didn't smell it along the river or in the CBD.

Perfectgentleman - I had to crack up over your Windsor Star headline! You had me for a minute - got me to thinking - that wasn't this morning's headline! You have a perfect sense of humor. You really stepped up to the plate on this one!

I think the smell is carried on the wind - from the farms in Essex county. I was in Windsor the other day and, yes, it truly smelled like shit! A lot of the farmers have put down some kind of fertilizer and super industrial strength manure on their fields. I'm sure that is where the smell is coming from!

Thankfully, in this case, I burned much of my olfactory sense during the Miami Vice 80s.

At least the distance smells are wonderfully masked, I'm still good with nearfield scents.

I noticed it Wednesday afternoon as I walked through Hart Plaza. I figured it may have been leftover acid cloud smell from the chemical spill in Melvindale on Tuesday.

Lefty beat me to it. We have the worst sewers around. I've even been smelling it in the Tap Water.

Raw sewage cannot get into your tap water. Totally different networks/systems.

You'd think that with all the Homeland Security funding they would have solved this mystery by now. Not to suggest it's a security problem but surely they would have the technology to track down the source of the smell.

You folks don't want to remember the very curious and complete grid of chemtrails they laid the few nights previous.

One set, the night previous, was a spectacular multiple V...obviously chemicals, NOT mere contrails, because they lingered for a good long while.

Funky smell was all over the nation...even across national borders?! Begs the question...

Perhaps that stench downtown is emanating from this sorry mess:

det news

You can read the Detroit News articles about this here and here and also read the discussion over on the "City Council and their Cronies" thread.

i think Perfectgentleman is trying to lay blame somewhere else where someone smelt it delt it:-)

OK
I figured this out now people,
the reason we have this nauseating quaff of disheartening stench in our nostrils is...

Canada, Blame Canada! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =wOzG7bBylRo

The farmers are tiling their soils and adding manure to their fields,
HENCE THE STENCH!

I used to live by farms and it never smelled as bad as it does around here. It's a very thick, acrid poo-gas smell that hangs out for a day once about every other week.

I seriously doubt it's tilled fields as Lefty suggests. It's more like chemical sulfur. I'd blame the downriver chemical zone before cow manure.

Lefty's right.

Was out on the lake last night with a strong southerly breeze.

It's the same smell we used to get when we would go out to CMU for a football game.

Manure on the fields... which are all just outside of Windsor, South of Lake St. Clair.

After a couple of burritos in Mexican Village, I couldn't hold it.

My bad.
