Can someone please explain to me why the MI State Police resources are being used in this manner???! I thought we had a budget crisis and need to cut costs. Do they not have local police in Tawas? http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20071019/NEW S06/71019017 |

Baltgar; You are right on the money with sentence number two. Probably no local PD there. Have no fear the MSP will get to the bottom of the toothpicks! There may be a late breaking story at 11:00. |

Glad to see the entire state's taxes are going to this non-sense. I hope these communities reimburses the state police for all services received. If not it is a nice little way to tax the entire state to pay for their policing. |

The State Police have branch right in East Tawas, 5 miles away from Tawas City's police station. I would not be surprised if Tawas only had one or two cars. The worst part is that everybody knows that the perpetrators are kids. I thought it was a pretty good prank. |

I was thinking Revenge of the Nerds, too, when I read it. 5000 fucking toothpicks. Brilliant. Took a bunch of time... |

The best we could come up with was Epsom Salt on the rival's field. To top it off, one of the kids misspelled "Sucks" as "Sucs". |

Tawas is on Lake Huron, south of Oscoda, right on US-23. http://maps.google.com/maps?f= q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&t type=&q=Tawas&sll=42.334386,-8 3.273829&sspn=0.068017,0.18659 6&ie=UTF8&ll=44.209773,-83.581 238&spn=1.055237,2.985535&z=9& om=1 |

Maybe the MI State Police can have Veronica Mars help out the Tawas City police. |

Oh yeah...she's hot too. I am sure those grocery store clerks in Tawas would take one look at her and just start gabbing. |

While I agree that this is a waste of MSP time, I do not agree that it is a harmless prank. Toothpicks are dangerous. Simply rolling over them will not push them far enough into the ground. They may work their way out just far enough to poke out an eye, puncture a blood vessel, or damage a nerve when a player falls to the ground. My son drove a toothpick that was stuck in the carpet into his foot so far he had to have surgery to remove it. It bruised a ligament and almost hit the nerve that controls the foot. |

Yeah, that sucks and everything, but it will take a lot to convince me that damage inflicted by a toothpick is every going to be life threatening. Somebody needs to re-evaluate the priorities of all levels of government in the State of MI. It is what it is...a prank. |

They should line up all of the kids in the nearby schools and inspect their fingers for splinters. |

They should also check the area for recent toothpick purchases that were unusually large. |

lilpup.... you mean that the article saying that the police were checking businesses door-to-door isn't enough to imply that they were asking about toothpick purchases? any smart criminal buys online nowadays. imagine the number of toothpicks you could buy on the cheap! (+ shipping of course) |

The internet? Might that make it a Homeland Security issue? Did they test the toothpicks to see if anything was on them? Were they flavored? (Message edited by lilpup on October 20, 2007) |

Wow, curly-q plastic crap on one end? Does that mean they were the really long deli-style stab-a-sandwich type instead of standard household ones? If they were the household ones they could've been flat or round, but the deli-style ones are always round, aren't they? Did they all have the same color plastic or were there mixed colors? |
