Boy, the names are popping up from out of the past. Yeah, I knew Smith....Snuffy Smith. That wasn't his first name, but I don't think anyone knew what it really was. He was just Snuffy, and a fun guy. Ed Ploe retired as an Inspector, maybe Commander, and was one of the 'bosses' you liked. One great guy to work for or with. Jim Nichol was there at motor during my stay there. Another good guy. Were all my fellow officers good guys? Nope, there were a few idiots along the way, and their career records usually reflected it. I remember one who got into a fight with his wife, so he handcuffed her to the stairway bannister and went to work. I suspect they're divorced by now....... |

Ray1936, there was an instructor at the range in '68, Sam Camela. I think he was recovering from a motorcycle accident. |

I also saw two officers walking the beat on Mack Avenue along the GPC border earlier this week, and thought it was odd to see. |

"Ray1936, there was an instructor at the range in '68, Sam Camela. I think he was recovering from a motorcycle accident." Sam recovered well. He lives about three miles from me here in Henderson, NV. We get together often. Here's a photo of him I took a few years back when we were out exploring some old ghost towns.

Ray1936, glad you are OUT of Detroit. Things are probably better there than here. The economy and job markets are pretty tough here. I see more "toys" for sale every day. They're parked in peoples yards or in some vacant lot. Debt load may be catching up with some of them. |

Things are good out here except for the real estate market. Lot of foreclosures, but 75% of them are by investors who tried to flip a property and got caught in the present downtrend. Other than that, jobs are plentiful and the economy is good. And the State of Nevada has a balanced budget without a tax increase.....and WITHOUT a state income tax! |

We saw them in Rosedale Park on Friday - they must have been ending their shift there were about 10 of them getting into and/or walking towards a police van. I hear they are in my neighborhood but I haven't seen them yet. Very cool to see them! |

" Where do you go when summer heat hits 110 degrees?" From my air conditioned house at 72 degrees to my air conditioned car at 72 degrees to my favorite air conditioned casino at 72 degrees. Sometimes I'll hit the pool at our rec center with its 80 degree water. But come February I'll watch the Super Bowl on my patio. Where will you be? |

"If it was dead you wouldn't be getting your pension check." Of course I meant figuratively, not literally. And the pension check gets smaller and smaller each month as the City continues to stick it to us with higher medical premiums each month lately. Not to mention an annual $1,600 deductible. About the only thing it's good for is catastrophic illness, which, fortunately, hasn't happened here. And also fortunately I'm covered under Medicare since I worked in the private sector after retirement. |

Stinger, yeah, Bob Brozowski. I think later on he got off the bikes and worked the freeways until the State Police took over that hunk of turf. You sure knew all the BIG guys! |

The issue with health care costs is hitting everyone in the private and public sector. It will continue to get worse. My snarky comment was probably out of line but I know entirely too many people that have contempt for the city, seem to hope for its demise (not saying you do) but happily collect and cash checks from the city. It frustrates me and brought about the unfair comment. Sometimes I think that the city of Detroit subsidizes half the residents in Florida and Nevada. At laset I am young enough so I plan my savings and invetsment for retirement ignoring SS and pensions. There will be some people between our ages that will get the shaft. |

"It frustrates me and brought about the unfair comment." No, it was a fair comment, Jt, and an objective one. It is true that many who have bailed wish nothing but bad for Detroit, and it's a shame. I look for better things, to paraphrase the City's motto. Maybe that's why I go back every year and just drive around the old town, like I'll be doing next week. Despite all the hand wringing about social security, I believe it will be around for decades and decades to come, but the price they'll be taking out of your paycheck in years ahead is going to skyrocket. But I don't want to threadjack, so we'll leave that subject for another forum. |

Ray1936; those were the best of times and the worst of times. Not hard to realize there were some great folks who worked for DPD back in those days. Some of them were downright memorable. It is a good place to be from but I don't ever want to go back there and work or live. A few trips I have made there caused my head to move back and forth. Stinger |

I have more interest in the history of Detroit. It is interesting to read things from those my age or older. Things from back in the 40's, 50's and 60's interest me. Detroit was a pretty nice town back then. At one point it was the fifth largest city in the U.S.. There were a helluva lot of cars and others items built in that town. Some of the folks who lived there were a cut above. |
