Along the lines of the "Britney-Death-Watch", I have a running bet with some friends/co-workers that "leadership" in Lansing will implode and shut things down at the end of October much like it did at the end of September.

Contrary to popular belief, this year's budget has not been settled yet. There are still approx. $400 million in cuts that need to be implemented. The sales tax is slated to be cut to pieces once the various groups that didn't have lobbyists on the floor of the Capitol last week swing into high gear.

Oh yeah, and there's that "Recall" thing that's beginning to take form.

Now, this is just a friendly wager, and to keep everything nice and legal, there's nothing changing hands here.

Any takers?

So, is that a "yes" on another shutdown?

Well, here we are.

T-minus 17 days and counting.

The service tax is in peril. No decisions have been made on which of the governor's "valued" safety net programs will be on the chopping block. And the recalls have begun for those responsible for the reprehensible taxes that were passed two-weeks ago.

Given the time that it took to arrive at a partial budget for next year (remember: this one is only temporary until November), does anyone think that this won't happen again?

Or will some 11th hour miracle occur?

All Im interested in is the recall. Several family members want to add their names to it. Where can I direct them to the sign-up sheet?

What city do they live in, Hpgrmln?

If it's in the northern portion of Warren or the southern portion of Sterling Heights, please call the Organization for the Recall of Steve Bieda at (586) 604-1056.

As for the other recalls going on right now, all I can do is direct you to the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance site here.

There may be a delay due to the volume of responses that they have received over the past two weeks (but they are responding).

Folks,

The Michigan State Government is back in business. The income tax hike has been ratified by both Democratic House and the Republican Senate and Granholm signed it into law. It's over and done until next fiscal year.

Yes there are other bill proposals that need to voted on. But that doesn't lead into a state shutdown. The income tax hike is the only prime key the Granholm wants and she got it.

And that pesky $440 million in cuts to be decided at a later date (like by the end of this month)?

I'm willing to bet that by next Sunday, there will still be nothing new to report out of Lansing except maybe some talk about another continuation budget to "buy" lawmakers (and the state spending machine) another 30 days.

After listening to the debate on the Paul W. Smith show the other morning between Jenny's former bodyguard and now-MSP Director Peter Munoz and OC Sheriff Michael Bouchard (over the lawsuit Munoz has filed against Bouchard), Munoz came off sounding like a prissy, political hack who is still carrying Jenny's water in his new job.

If I were a lawmaker in Lansing, I'd be thinking that given all of the other more important budget things Munoz should be focusing on, here he is playing politics instead.

Well, I'm not a state lawmaker but since Munoz obviously needs help in getting focused on finding some spending reductions to help balance the state budget, let me suggest that all funding for this piece of MSP "pork" be immediately stripped from future state budgets. Latest update:

There is now a bill moving through the Michigan House to revoke the 6% service tax.

Things don't look too well for November...

How can somebody get a tally on the number of recall petition(s) being circulated the past few days? The Dem in Warren was the first to be targeted. Getting 25% there might not be too hard. It was in Center Line when I got to sign for Prop 2 while playing softball near there.

According to MIRS, "The chances of an outright repeal coming through the Legislature any time soon are remote, at best."

quote:

How can somebody get a tally on the number of recall petition(s) being circulated the past few days?

There are 6 to date.

I should have been more explicit... How often do the number of signatures get released? How many signatures would be needed for getting 25% of the votes cast in the past gubernatorial election for those six districts?

Just ask your county clerk for that info.

It's readily available for the asking.

"Meet deadline for passing budget cuts - Another 'continuation' budget is unacceptable"
The Detroit News Editorial, Oct. 25, 2007:
Thirteen months is more than enough time for Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the Legislature to come to agreement on balancing the state budget. Any talk of extending budget deliberations for yet another month -- or possibly three -- should be shut down before entering this final weekend of negotiations.

The 2007-2008 Michigan budget was supposed to be finished by Oct. 1. A last-minute agreement on tax hikes kept the shutdown of state government brief and came with a 30-day continuation to give lawmakers time to finalize $440 million in spending cuts.

They have not used that time well. No agreements have been reached on major reductions, and it looks like talks again will go to the wire. Last time around, Granholm said she wouldn't sign a continuation budget unless there was a deal on raising taxes. That principle should hold this time.....
