I am trying to determine what this interesting looking building was. It is located a few blocks East of John R and about 2 blocks South of Grand Blvd. There was not a sign on the street and only 2 buildings on it ( the other being a house across the street ). I believe the street may have been Baltimore Street but I am not certain as there was no street sign at either end. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again!

I remember it as a church, too.

That area's known as Highland Park?

Yeah, it was a church. I remember a barbeque there once. Used to drive by regularly between work and home.

I'm not sure if it IS Highland Park. I got all turned around with all the driving I did that day.

I asked the same question during last Saturday's Detroit Synergy bike ride. Someone thought it used to be a church as well. It's Detroit.

If you are asking about the building in the photo file you attached, it is not in Highland Park. It is in the New Center area (Baltimore near John R). It was a church for many years, but think it originally opened as a Chinese restaurant "Victor Lim's Forbidden City"...back in '61 me and the girls hung out there for some of the best Mai Tai's in town....

I would say that area is Milwaukee Junction not Highland Park. South of Grand Blvd. and all

Highland Park ends at Tuxedo and Tennyson. Milwaukee is wayyyy south of that.

You must be new to Detroit to confuse that with Highland Park.

Welcome

Thanks for everyone's help! I wasn't sure if it was highland park or not as I was driving all over the place in circles for about 4 hours taking pictures of buildings. Kind of lost track of where I was.

The Hong family's home for many years was the mid-century modern house on the the southeast corner of Boston Blvd. and Hamilton, across from the Berry Gordy House. It was designed for them by Nathan Johnson, a Detroit architect.

That ad is from a 1967 Yellow Pages. "To be built within one year..." means it was built in late '67 or '68.

Way to go, Mikem!! When I saw the posting and the photo, I kept thinking Chinese restaurant, but I didn't have any reference materials with me at work!

Hey Detroitderek, the 8th Precinct Police Station in this photograph is located in Detroit on Grand River, not in Highland Park:

You know, I drive by that building at least once a week when leaving the post office and have always wondered what it used to be. Great job with the identification, Mike. :-)

Thanks again to everyone! This was the first time I've posted anything on this site, and everyone was extremely helpful. Thanks again to Mikem and everyone for all the info on this very cool looking building.

You can still go eat at Stanley's Other Place at the Southwest corner of 8 mile and Woodward (not open for lunch, but open 'til 3 AM Fri and Sat (very busy late). It has the dining room with a large red oval banquette that goes around the entire dining room. The takeout area is separate, and has booths and a counter. The food is very good, classic Detroit-style Cantonese.
