It's been a well kept secret the smallie fishing has been great for quite some time. It's been overlooked due to walleye popularity.

The Smallmouth fishing in Erie, St.Clair and the Detroit River is some of the best in the World and has been for some time. It's not uncommon to catch several dozen keeper size Smallies on a good day. Fortunately for them they're not quite as tasty as Walleye or Perch so all my Smallmouth live to fight another day.

There was a bass tourney during Riverdays or riverfest. I don't know if it is an annual thing.

Filet as best as you can, roll them in flour, fry in butter (no substitutes), and squeeze a slice of lemon on the result. Dang near as good as perch or walleye.

Should be done within 12 hours of the catch; they can go skunky fast unless frozen quickly.

Bass are traditionally found in cloudy, swampy, somewhat stagnent water. I personally find them horribly over-rated. People seem to like them because the are stupid easy to catch and taste "like" or "close to better fish. The last highlited are the key words. So it might not be that great they are in the detroit river. As for taste filet, season heavily, batter and pan fry.

Actually you're describing Largemouth Bass. Smallmouth Bass prefer clear/clean water with hard bottom such as what is now found in the Detroit river and neighboring waters. There's also a huge difference in the taste of a Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass. IMO Largemouth Bass is nearly unpalatable, but it's cousin the Smallmouth can be quite good if caught in cool water and properly prepared.

Another example of gentrification in Detroit. The government should make sure that affordable housing opportunities are available for any fish that are displaced.
