Hi Everyone, did ya'll know that today, September 1, would have been Walter Reuther's 100th birthday had he lived and not been killed in a plane crash in 1970? He was truly a great leader and affected Detroit and the nation greatly. I like his quote:

"There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow men. There is no greater contribution than to help the weak. There is no greater satisfaction than to do it well."

There is a website in his honor at: http://reuther100.wayne.edu/in dex.php

He was a great man. He would be sick to see what's happened to the working man today.

What would he think about the off-shore manufacturing creating the jobs bank?

"According to labour historian Nelson Licthenstein, when these contracts were first negotiated, UAW president Walter Reuther warned car companies in the 1940s that they were courting trouble by making long-term promises they might not be able to keep, and urged them to support national health insurance instead."

Walter Reuther was a "Realist".

Despite the anti-union bent of many here, a Reuther is needed today, Corporations need workers, workers need Corporations.

The balance between the two is necessary to a successful economy.

He would have thought the jobs bank to be a great idea. He would have known that the more things change, they stay the same. Same villification of the worker, same violent diversionary tactics, same lies and spin.

Happy Birthday Walter Reuther (with a shout-out to his splendid May).

Walter was a visionary and a great example of a leader. If big business was so great and thought about the welfare of the working man, there wouldn't be any need for a union. Now they just ship the jobs overseas and screw those guys.

jjaba loved Reuther. He supported Cesear Chavez, ML King, and so many movements for justice.

jjaba marched in 1963 on Woodward Ave. with King and Walter Reuther.

Having got to read and hear personal stories of Reuther, I have the same view as Jams. Reuther was an advocate but also practical - and I'm not the biggest union supporter.

unions had a place in time, now it's time in place is overdue. unions overpriced themselves out of the market, sorry but true. There are many laws in place now where unions are just another tax on business.

Walter Reuther's UAW caused all boats to float higher in Michigan...he made it possible for a DPD street cop in the 30's and 40's to send his kids to college.
