Does anyone here use craigslist? I noticed that Detroit is one of the only major cities not listed under the US cities quick link column on craigslist's homepage. I know a lot of people in other cities who swear by this site, but I get the impression that it isn't widely used in metro Detroit (with the exception of Ann Arbor). Am I right? |

I use it quite a bit, and there seems to be alot of stuff, and apartments. I have however noticed a lack of job postings on craigslist. I think metro Detroit has less use than other areas but I wouldn't say it isn't widely used. |

I use it all the time, but I have noticed that there are more "quality" postings in other cities. i.e. the jobs postings are primarily scams. That said, I still find it very useful and check in on it daily. |

It was listed until fairly recently... I haven't seen it in at least a year. Last summer I listed something on Detroit's craigslist to sell. I sold it in Detroit through that site, but even then the link wasn't there. |

Maybe Detroit isn't on the quicklink city list because it's not a major city? And what's so hard about clicking on "Michigan" first, and then "Detroit metro" when the next web page comes up? As for usage, I sold a car on Craigslist Detroit. Yeah, it works. People read it. (Message edited by Fury13 on August 24, 2007) |

YOU WANT BACKLASH? HERE YOU GO, Up until early summer of 2006 craigslist had “Detroit” in their main list of cities on the front page along with all the other cities. What happened was someone thought it was unfair to say “Detroit” when they did not live in Detroit proper. For the obvious reasons it was changed to “Metro Detroit,” which I assume didn’t fit into their criteria so they just left it out. I remember when this happened and it pissed me off. I tried to sign the city back up using their (at least at that time) request for new city feature-- it never happened. The really frustrating aspect of this whole thing is that we have just as many hits as St. Louis, Chicago, and in some cases more than cities put together e.g. Orlando, Austin and Portland, just to name a few. —COME ON… Are we that fucked UP! Why do we even pick up on this stuff? Are we really getting screwed by the whole country? It’s almost like people from outside the region can’t even comprehend the mess we have here, so they just stay away & don’t get involved. Here is the Craigslist forum on the topic from that time. http://forums.craigslist.org/? ID=53908600 |

I still don't follow the logic. If you click on Washington DC - you then further subdivide into Nova, DC or MD. Three distinct states/districts. Couldn't they do the same with Detroit - Detroit, OC, WC and MC? But until then I'm fine with the extra stroke of finger exercise... |

That was interesting. Was that the only CL discussion about it? The thing is, little things like this really do have an impact on how outsiders perceive the city. For such a high traffic site like CL, it really is worth metro Detroit's while to have a "Detroit" quick link on the main page. |

I may be misinterpreting this dustup, but, we lost the Detroit category just so somebody selling a car in "Bingham Farms" doesn't have to be associated with bad old Detroit? |

The forum thread referenced above is dated 12/9/2006. I'm sure I saw "Detroit" listed sometime this year. I know because when I saw it was listed under "US Cities", I felt a little pride knowing Detroit was still up there with Boston, Chicago, Dallas, etc. It may seem like a small thing, but CL is huge and even a little front page real estate there is a big deal. Well, maybe it was last year when I saw it listed there. In any case, this really typifies the worst of the suburb/urban divide and I don't need to say anything more about the results. |

^I'm pretty sure Detroit hasn't been on that list in a while. I'm on CL a lot and I noticed that it was gone about a year ago. Since then I have checked periodically to see whether they have added it back or not. I remember when Ann Arbor was on that list too. I think Detroit got the ax first... |

We buy and sell on craigslist all the time. We live in Green Oak Township (Livingston County) but buy and sell on the Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Flint lists. Sometimes Jackson, Flint and Central Michigan, as well, if the item is special enough. We have always assumed Detroit means Detroit area, Ann Arbor means Ann Arbor area, etc. craigslist is a wonderful way to buy and sell. You can post photos on your listing as well. |

Well the old divide-and-conquer surburbanites have succeeded yet once again in demoting our entire community. Sad, sad, sad. (p.s. I think being the 11th largest city in the country DOES qualify us as being MAJOR. That was really a knuckleheaded comment.) |

This isn't about how great Craigslist is, I agree, It's absolutely wonderful-I buy 85% of everything on it. But, The real question is why is Detroit not on the main list of cities? Why are we the only city to have a metro in front of our name? Obviously other cities have Metros--why are we singled out? |

Lowell: I believe, and will assume others might join me, that you are the best to contact Craig. He's been in your house, comeon. You know better than anyone here that there is no "cost" with having "Detroit" listed - and help him list it in such a way that it denotes our great area so that "Bingham Farms" (remind me to avoid it, whereever it is) can have their own exclusive (WASP?) segment of CL. Remind Craig that at 2 times in our history, Detroit was the wealthiest city on the planet. Remind Craig that he benefited from that wealth. Remind Craig that you'll be reporting back here whatever he does (or doesn't) do to give this struggling area a little dignity, dignity that won't cost him a dime. Side note: Rbfan, other than your f-word (which I was almost convinced was justified) I certainly admire your "spunk" for lack of a better word. Detroit needs more like you, thanks. I love craigslist. We sold a car on craigslist. I bought a table and chairs ($20!), a curio cabinet, a handpainted cabinet and a small desk on craigslist. A good friend of mine purchased his stove and refrigerator from a craigslist ad I found for him (and they are in great shape!). Finally, I put an ad on the pet section of craigslist and found the dog we adopted! |

What is so hard to understand We have a population well over 4 million and yet_______?? we aren't even given the respect of our name alongside others.
