What Detroit could learn from Minneapolis: Minneapolis actually tracks gunshot sounds weekly and uses technology to determine whether the noise is actual gunfire, fireworks, etc. http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.u s/police/crime-statistics/code for/shotsfired.asp For news release: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.u s/newsroom/200701/20070130-nr_ SpotShotter.asp Something like this here might help deter random, "just for fun" shooting. |

I read about this technology being developed or tested maybe 6-8 years ago. Right then I also thought what a great get police to those locations more rapidly before people could get away. Especially if you can blanket the city with a network of detectors. And now Minneapolis is using this. It'll be interesting to watch and see how things pan out in the long term. It seems to have done well in its first month in its limited area. |

Why is it that members are still bickering at the Woodbridge thread when we should discuss how this could be part of a Detroit revitalization plan? |

I believe that Minnesota has a statewide tax that send money to Miinneapolis (or the twin cities). Just think of the cool things that Detroit could do if there was a statewide tax that sent money to Detroit. I believe that there is a similar tax in New York. |

We had state funding for the library, but that was cut in 2002. I think the city needs to reprioritize, focus less on casinos and more on reducing gun crime. We wouldn't have as many posts like Bussey's in Woodbridge, and I think it would send a strong message. From Jimaz's link, the site looks like a Homeland Security ad. Surely, the city could get federal funding if they focused on that aspect. Cities smaller than Detroit have it.. |

Chicago does the same thing with the CPD cameras. The newer generation is able to detect gunfire and the direction it came from, and immediately move and zoom the camera appropriately. |

Does anyone understand how this SpotShotter works? The simplified graphic on their website seems to ignore echoes from buildings. Maybe they're able to filter out the echoes? Do they have to calibrate it with real gunfire (blanks)? |

i was just going to comment on how Chicago implemented a gunshot recognition system in conjunction with video surveillance. I believe they thought they had no choice as the murders soared over the 600 mark not to long ago. Crime has since decreased, dramatically. Detroit could REALLY use something like this. But the DPD would actually have to care in the first place. |

Quote: "Does anyone understand how this SpotShotter works?" I don't know how that one works, but I know how one could work. A perimeter of microphones that record sound and calculate the time each one received the waves. The software would then calculate the direction or origin of the sound. The camera could be positioned by simple global XYZ coordinates and generic robotics. The software could also distinguish echos from the original sounds by tracking the first sound only. So it's probably not very accurate on multiple signatured events. Or it would have to be very smart to do so. And it could even be calibrated to it's surroundings by "showing" it the echo patterns and giving it the exact location of origin. IOW a shot fired here sounds like this. Maybe I should build that and sell it to the city. Knowing a gunshot from a firecracker? Easy, just a library that it makes comparison and determination. This is probably its most reliable role. |

There are things called 'perimeter' microphones that do not capture echo. |

That how stuff works link explains a lot of it. They claim it can differentiate between gunshots and auto exhaust backfires. I'd guess there's some signal processing in there somewhere. |
