Well who says there's no such thing as miracles? Somehow, I've defied the odds of the gloomy Michigan economy - and the even gloomier automotive sector - and got a job at DaimlerChrysler (oops.... I meant "The New Chrysler LLC") this week. Any friendly words of advice before I go into the lions den this week?

Not really that much of a miracle. Chrysler is about to go into heavy hiring mode on the salaried side. Mostly powertrain engineers. Those impending EPA requirements will require a major increase in the number of people dedicated to powertrain fuel economy improvements. The other large demand will be for engineers able to do vehicle weight reduction.

Thanks guys! I'll be in HQ. I'm more of a marketing person than engineering (the old barely passing algebra & stats thing was a bummer).

Well, I guess I'll have to turn in my 8-year-old Escort for something newer and flashier -- like a Benz. Oops, wait.... we're not part of that company anymore are we? Any "reliable" Chrysler cars you guys can recommend? I'm definitely NOT a PT Cruiser kinda girl :-)

If you don't drive a Chrysler at CTC (what we call the HQ) you'll have to park in a paved parking lot away from the building. Upgrade to a Chrysler model and you get parking in a parking garage adjacent to the building. How's that for a little motivation? Congrats regardless. You'll love it! And the cafeteria for breakfast is yummy.

get an old "M" body--Dodge Diplomat, Plymouth gran Fury, Chrysler Fifth ave.

318 V-8, torqueflite trans.

Damn near every one of those made is still on the road, either totally beater-ed out or pristine, wich few exceptions in between. Can't kill 'em.

any other models are better new than not.

i personally like the Charger...

i drive a Caliber right now. its slightly better fuel economy. im at the tool and die plant...

If they need anyone in I.T. or engineering software, I'm available. That would be a short commute for me and an excellent excuse to trade up to a Viper!

"If you don't drive a Chrysler at CTC (what we call the HQ) you'll have to park in a paved parking lot away from the building. Upgrade to a Chrysler model and you get parking in a parking garage adjacent to the building."

Did the people who drove Mercedes' get to park in the garage? Are they still allowed to?

I worked at a Chrysler owned plant a few years ago (before the shit hit the fan) and they didn't do this separate parking thing that they do now. I do remember it being floated around that we could get discounts on Benz's though...

I once got a ride in a Mustang Cobra-R that a friend of mine who worked at Roush was helping develop. YEEEEOW! We opened it up on M-5 one night and I was embedded into my seat. All it had inside were a couple seats and the calibration equipment.

Yup Mercedes also has parking in the garage. When I worked at SHAP, that plant had separate parking for Chrysler and non Chrysler products. I never had a problem with it even though my wheels are GM - chalked it up to extra exercise.

JohnLodge, that photo was HOT!!!

Unfortunately with the $8 zillion in student loans I have to pay off, I don't think I will be affording a Viper any time soon. Thanks for the heads up that I'll probably have to park in the alley. I'm sure a girl coming to work at 6 a.m. every morning by herself should feel real secure about that. Geez!

Green badge or blue?

Back in 99/2000 I had a brief stint at Jeep/Truck in Detroit, wearing a green badge. Wow, the attitude coming from the blue badgers. Like they were working for God himself and the green badgers are some kind of low-life scum. One day I met a group of 20-something girls in the hallway and they approached me asking if I was a "Kelly Girl" cause they were having some kind of event to which they wanted to invite me. Kelly being a temp agency providing secretarial help. All had green badges of course. No, I wasn't. I'm a woman, I'm educated and I have two degrees and I did feel totally out of place. I hated this superior mentality at Chrysler. But guess what, I've been a full-time Daimler-Chrysler employee for the last 3 years, at their Commercial Vehicle Division (Detroit/Redford), now being just Daimler. So far, we still have all the benefits of buying Mercedes/Chrysler/Jeep products at the employee advantage rates, but I don't know how much longer this will last.

Blue = Chrysler Emp?
Green = Temp/Hiring Agency?

I don't recall the different badges my summer there in 2003 as an intern.

I liked working there. Lot of fun. Amazing place, with everything under one roof. My fav was the pilot plant. Always some cool crap going on in there....

Congrats on the new job!

Oh, and in regards to parking, I had a Mazda at the time and had to park in the back, open lot. It was a bit of a hike, but I didn't mind too much. The worst was if there was a thunderstorm and I forgot the umbrella or it was super hot out. Car took forever to cool down. Anyway, as a college kid my $1500 Mazda got me around, so I wasn't going to be able to afford a new Chrysler. With that said, when it comes time to get a new car, get what you like. Hopefully it is a Chrysler product. But life is too short to drive a car you don't like :-) I love my Miata, but even if I worked at Chrysler, you wouldn't see me gettin rid of it! You just worked all day. Drive home in something you love!

Congrats, Yvette. Lots of fast food along Opdyke Rd. if you get tired of the cafeteria chow.

Those of us who got called into skilled trades from production to CTC, were told they made it to the country club.

I'm at Sterling Stamping in the Toolmaking trade. (the food is quite a bit less appetising here, more of an acquired taste. I haven't acquired it yet.)

Yvette,

Congrats, indeed.

I work on the retail level for Chrysler at metro-Detroit's oldest dealership. When the time comes to replace the Escort, please e-mail me: ecriteser@hotmail.com.

Mention you are from the forum and I will sell or lease you a new Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep at absolute cost.

Again, congratulations on your new position!

Congrats Yvette!

The cafeterias at CTC are excellent (at least they used to be). I worked there back in 97-98, and the commute from Rochester was lovely. :-)

Knew an exec that kept getting his parking permit pulled because he would drive his Cadillac to work. Then he'd switch back to the Chrysler product just long enough to get it back. Then he'd start driving the Caddy again. He was in IT, and he loved messing with the parking folks.

Johnlodge - My offer is good for all forumers.

56packman - Unfortunately, no Wrangler Unlimiteds or Rubicons.

I should have put in the disclaimer: No SRTs, Vipers, Charger RT Daytonas, stretch 300s or 2008 vans. Sebring Convertibles, yes, in a few months when I have more of a supply.

Other than that, wide open!

Nitro? Commander? Liberty? Grand Cherokee? Patriot? Compass? Durango? Ram, Dakota, Aspen, Charger, Avenger, Caliber, Sebring, 300, PT Cruiser, Pacifica? No problem!

Did I miss anything? No diesels, either!

Good luck there at Chrysler.

Back in the mid 80's, I purchased a big green 1973 Chrysler New Yorker and was happy with it. It was a big boat of a car for a young single man to have and it was terrible on gas milage, but it was very luxurious. Great for long trips or for going to the drive-in theater. It gave me only a few mechanical problems, but nothing unusual for an older used car though.

It looked very much like this one - same white roof, white-walled tires, and four doors. Except mine was a darker color green and had a little rust.

There are tons of photographs of cars all over the net.

One way to locate automobile photographs is to use Google [http://www.google.com].

Enter

1953 Chrysler "New Yorker"

in the text entry box and select the Search button. When I ran the search, it yielded several thousand results. The Google image search works well also. Below is a sample of the results.

Take on the job with zeal and be the most productive employee that you can be. Don't let preconceived expectations inhibit your performance. This attitude will make you an invaluable employee and role model for others. It is infectious, ultimately the entire company will hopefully engender the work ethic and be a ripping success.

Avoid Union demands and impediments to your doing the job to the fullest. Also avoid any attitude that hints at an entitlement mentality (ie "I deserve this or that"). In the end, you will be rewarded financially and otherwise. It will not be easy, and pressure will mount to have you conform to the entitlement mode.

Good luck.
