I think the call center closing was old news, but this is the first I've heard of relocating pilots.

quote:

Although Spirit moved its headquarters to Miramar in 1998, it retained a reservations call center and a pilot base in Detroit, its second-largest operations center.

Now Spirit is closing both. The call center will be shuttered at the end of this month, displacing about 130 workers. And last week, Spirit decided to eliminate the pilot base, consolidating it in Fort Lauderdale where Spirit's passenger traffic has grown by 70 percent over the past year.

...

Some Detroit-area pilots, however, are upset about relocating to South Florida where housing costs are more than double the level in Michigan. Last year, the median price of a home in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area was $371,200, compared with just $151,700 in Detroit, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Who cares if the S. Florida housing costs are astronomical. It's not like you'll get what you pay for. That won't stop Pulte from building $5 mansions at 63 Mile Road, further destroying the Detroit market.

Sorry, I'm on a cynical high tonight and am just venting.

That said, it's cheap to live here because of the way we dictate the growth system. So the economy becomes gold again...that much more incentive for Pulte to plow over Old McDonald's farm at 101 and a 1/2 Mile Road, sucking the life out of what could have been a nice, dense, urban, thriving Macomb Township.
