I have no idea if these things ever do any good, but here's a petition to repeal Michigan's Driver Responsibility Law (the "bad driver debtor's prison" law that was discussed here a few weeks ago.) IMO, this law won't be repealed until it's struck down in court, which appears to be happening in Virginia after that state passed a similar law recently. |

Something interesting from that second link: The main argument in the legal challenge in Virginia is not that the fees constitute double jeopardy, or that they unfairly impact low-income drivers, but that the state can't collect them from out-of-state drivers too. That should answer the question about whether it's just a money grab. What do you bet the legislators in Virginia are busy trying to write a bill that would allow them to slap huge fines on "unsafe" drivers from other states too? Problem solved! |
