3 Mile Road--must not be near here.

3 Mile for metro Detroit would be Plymouth.

The below is NBC News' list of all U.S. bridges similar in design to the Interstate 35W bridge that collapsed in Minneapolis on Aug. 1.

There's a specially named phobia for fearing bridges.

Michigan's bridge safety record is near the bottom, too. MI is good for bottoming with various metrics.

I hear that Oklahoma and Rhode Island's bridges are the riskiest. Michigan's are close to third worst. Yet, MI's bridge guy makes his perfunctory assurance that we have nothing to fear--even though our legal truck loads are about 80% heavier than most states.

Several bridges designed before roughly 1975 are defective or functionally obsolete. Fortunately, dozens of bridges of that era were removed entirely during the recent overhauls of I-94 and I-96.

MI also built its highway system before many other states, so it has many more functionally obsolete bridges. I think the Lodge work this summer took many bridges off that list also.

My mom told me she read the Mackinac Bridge rated just about as structurally sound as the 35W bridge...somewhere in the 50 range.

Mackinac is rated a 56, which is much lower than i expected (i was trying to prove you wrong!) 35W was rated a 50, but was 'structurally deficient' compared to Mackinac's 'functionally obsolete'.

Ah, I can deal with functionally obsolete.

I also remember reading that sometime in the next 10 years they are completely replacing the bridge decking on the Mackinac Bridge, which will raise its score.

I looked on the detnews.com feature where you can search deficient or obsolete bridges in your county. In Oakland there were quite a few; many bridges over I-75 and I-75 ramps/bridges (the 1-75/1-696 interchange, for example) have problems. About a year ago I was using the turnaround that takes you over I-75 from eastbound 9 Mile to go to northbound I-75, and I saw (through a hole in the bridge) cars driving by on I-75 below me. Needless to say, many of those turnarounds are in need of work. A lot of bridges over Paint Creek in the Rochester and Lake Orion area, and a few over the Clinton River in Pontiac also are deficient or obsolete.

They were doing emergency repairs on the large bridge that takes eastbound 696 over 75 last Tuesday. Something was wrong with the expansion joint.

This looks like the detnews.com thing Dustin89 mentioned: Interactive: Structurally deficient Michigan bridges.

Yes, obviously that worked for the I35W bridge
