It's fuzzy and feel-good, but where will the region be a month from now? Most likely where it was a month before the local media forced this region to review the city's defining civil disturbance. Where will the region be when its comes up on effective rapid transit, again? Where will the region be when different municipalities are faced with the fact that some need to merge with others? Really, these type of events don't mean much of anything if nothing real is produced from them. Anyone here has good reason to be cynical given the track record on regional cooperation. I hate to say it, but unless the region is forced into municipal cooperations, I don't see much changing. |

True Lmichigan. Still, it's good to see this kind of thing happening in Detroit. More shows of 'Unity' would definitely help the beloved city and the surrounding suburbs too. If only the media outlets of Southeast Michigan should expose us all to black people and white people smiling together more often... [yeah-right!] I'm surprised that this thread is so inactive. |

I still think it is funny (not in a haha kind of way) that Detroit has a better relationship with Windsor than with many of its suburbs. Of course, maybe rivers (and customs officers) make better neighbours. With respect to the article, Detroit's mayor can say "let it go", but he himself must also "let it go". "Do as I say, not as I do", rarely works. |

There is still far to much of an us-vs-them rhetoric around here, with only minimal amounts of lip service to the idea of what's good for x is good for y |

Blaming the mayor (or any single person) is just an excuse. No excuses! The regions population can all make their own decisions based on their own good judgment. Although it does help us all to see LB Patterson and Kwame together we all have to play a part in this. We have to "do the right thing" - sorry Spike - in spite of those who may try to fight racial cooperation. The residents of the regions many suburbs have to stop bashing Detroit. Residents of Detroit have to stand up and fight for their neighborhood and realize that it is beautiful. I'm NOT talking about a big group hug. But, an understanding that the region goes as Detroit goes and vice-versa would go a long way |

"It is my sincere HOPE that our gathering here today will be a new beginning." HOPE is empty and means nothing... I agree with Lmich's take...we will be in the same exact position in the months to come. |

"There is still far to much of an us-vs-them rhetoric around here, with only minimal amounts of lip service to the idea of what's good for x is good for y" The Detroit area is so divided! I dont know if anything can surmount the rift in the region. I still look for the day when I hear of a race war in detroit with 8 mile being the front line. We hate them they hate us is all I hear. Its been that way forever. I would love to see it change, but dont look for that to happen anytime soon. (please excuse my pessimism, but thats the way I see the detroit metro area) I did notice something while I was there though. For a city that is 87% black, I didnt see a lot of black people downtown memorial day weekend and virtually NONE in any of the casino's other than workers. (Just an observation). |

Is there any sort of monthly or 6 week 1 night "mayors meeting" for SE michigan? Seems this might be a good start? I believe they do something similar in chicago. Talk about regional issues. Don't know how much gets done, but at least the people have to interact and get to know each other. Lot easier to get stuff done when you actually talk to the other parties, even if you don't really like them personally. |
