I was saddened to learn of the death of Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine over the weekend in a car crash in Morocco. I know that he was controversial in many ways, but he was well read and definitely had a lot to say on a great many topics and he shared it with so many people from the area and around the world. I think he enlightened a lot of people! I first heard him speak at a lecture series on the history of Detroit during the Tricentennial year. He was entertaining and shared a lot of personal stories about the neighborhood in which he grew up north of Grand Blvd., west of Henry Ford Hospital. From the WDIV website: "Rabbi Sherwin Wine, who spent his life forsaking convention as the leader of a sect of Judaism that saw the religion as a culture instead of a faith, has died. He was 79. Wine, who founded the first congregation of Humanistic Judaism in suburban Detroit in 1963, was killed Saturday in an automobile accident in Essaouira, Morocco, the Society for Humanistic Judaism's Web site said. He and his partner, Richard McMains, were on vacation and were returning from dinner when their taxicab was hit by another driver. The cab driver was also killed, while McMains remained hospitalized in stable condition, the Web site said. Wine, who lived in Birmingham, founded The Birmingham Temple in 1963 and helped establish the Society for Humanistic Judaism in 1969. He retired in 2003. He built a movement that began with eight Detroit area families into a worldwide one with an estimated 40,000 members. The American Humanist Association selected him humanist of the year for 2003. ..." The Society for Humanistic Judaism has its home page (http://www.shj.org/) dedicated to him: In Memoriam Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine 1928-2007 |

This is a loss for humanity. He was a gentle, wise man. I had the pleasure of hearing him speak on several occasions when he visited my church. He also co-officiated in a Jewish/Catholic wedding of a good friend of mine many years ago. |

It is my hope that his teachings will inspire those left to continue his work. He was a exemplary model of a human. Condolences and well wishes to Richard, and the rest of his family. |

Very sorry to hear about Rabbi Wine. I remember him as a guest speaker at a MSTY(Mich State Temple Youth) conclave when I was a member of Temple Israel Youth Group. This was probably around 1961. He was very popular & inspirational as a youth leader. My sympathies to his family & friends. |

What a shame... He was a very nice man, I spoke with him a few times and always walked away amazed at how much you learned about life just having a regular conversation with him. |
