quote:Police bust 'kiddie crime wave' targeting Chrysler cars Doug Guthrie / The Detroit News DETROIT -- Authorities are seeking charges against eight juveniles and an 18-year-old for their part in what Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans has described as a "kiddie crime wave." Police from six agencies trapped the group Monday inside a new vehicle staging area at Chrysler's Jefferson North Plant. Undercover officers watching the lots said they spotted the group sneaking in and attempting to steal nine new vehicles with a value of more than $250,000. A wild car chase on the carmaker's property damaged several vehicles and police cruisers. The children taken into custody were as young as 13. "These individuals have been a kiddie crime wave at this facility and most likely elsewhere on the county's east side," Evans said in a statement released Tuesday. "I understand that one of the young suspects is so small that he only steals cars in which he knows he can reach the pedals." ... |

WDIV reported that one of the children was a 14 year old girl who happened to be pregnant. Sounds like she grew up in a good home. |

Probably the same group that has successfully made the Hazel Park race track stop storing DCX cars in its lots. |

I'm sure ADULTS recruited the KIDDIES because they knew the legal system would go easy on them. The adults who are responsible for manipulating these children should get the maximum sentence. |

My friend who works at that plant says new Grand Cherokees get stolen from the lot all the time. Thieves just climb over, help themselves and think nothing of ramming the fence to get out. You'd think there would be some better sort of security for that sort of thing. On a side note, if only these kids would apply their smarts in a classroom instead... |

you know, why is it that every time some youths in the city of detroit show a little initiative in an effort to make some money, they get harshly criticized by everyone? |

Also, if Chrysler included passive anti-theft ignitions on their vehicles (like pretty much all other manufacturers have done), that might not hurt. Chryslers are pretty much the only new vehicles stolen these days in Detroit. |

Noggin, you’re right about the state giving the scholarships to those bad little kids, and let’s give two for the mommy to be, as well. This is another good example of how Bush deployed the National Guard in the wrong country, as we need them to be here, murdering and raping OUR criminals. Grrrrr.... |

Since this crime occurred within the city of Detroit, can somebody please explain why the Detroit police were NOT involved? Wait, wait, I know the answer......simple car theft vs. people getting their heads cut off on the East side of Detroit? There are obviously other priorities. And you wonder why major auto manufacturers are setting up shop elsewhere? Dear Yvette, you're just enjoying your new area code in Southfield WAY too much. |

A related story summarizing some of these recent incidents... http://www.detnews.com/apps/pb cs.dll/article?AID=/20070724/M ETRO/707240378
quote:Juvenile car thefts skyrocket Two teens charged with stealing SUV that ended with death of woman are latest cases in Wayne Co. Norman Sinclair and Ronald J. Hansen / The Detroit News DETROIT -- Hours after charging two boys with using a stolen SUV to fatally injure a woman in a wheelchair, Wayne County prosecutors said juveniles are stealing or carjacking vehicles at nearly double the pace of last year. In 2006, prosecutors handled 24 carjacking cases involving juveniles compared with 20 such juvenile cases in the first six months of this year, said Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Maria Miller. She said so far this year, there have been 233 auto theft cases involving juveniles. "This has been a very difficult summer," said Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy. "For over the 20 years I have been in law enforcement, we have never been as besieged and plagued with juvenile car thefts and carjackings," Worthy said. ... "It clearly tracks what we've been seeing," said Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans, whose department is working several programs to combat car thefts. Juveniles also seem more reckless when police pursue them, Evans said. "You've got to be careful how you try to go after them," he said. "They will kill everyone in the neighborhood trying to get away." ... |
