A cool event coming up this weekend ...

Join the Detroit Historical Society for a family celebration like no other -- the City of Detroit’s 306th Birthday Party on Sunday, July 22nd from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Detroit Historical Museum

Admission is $3.06 for everyone in observance of the founding of the settlement of the “city on the straits” by French voyageur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac on July 24, 1701. Admission is free for Detroit Historical Society members or those who choose to become members at the event.

The Birthday Party this year focuses on Detroit’s early days, including the Native American and French experience. Meet French settlers in the dress of the era and learn about Native American culture and traditions that bring the region’s history to life. Kids can also learn about tracing their genealogy and receive a worksheet to take home. In addition, you can stroll inside the shops of the Museum’s signature Streets of Old Detroit. Enjoy a common snack of the 18th century, ginger cookies and iced apple juice, and participate (for a small donation) in an old-fashioned cake walk to win one of a variety of birthday cakes donated by local confectioners. Finally, you can get a preview of new exhibitions opening at the Detroit Historical Museum this September.

A special discount of $5 off new Detroit Historical Society memberships will be offered during the event. Detroit’s 306th Birthday Party is presented by Nordstrom and Great Stuff. For more information, call (313) 833-1805 or check the website at www.detroithistorical.org.

They also have a cool online auction that just went live at www.detroithistorical.org ...

Lots of interesting items to bid on, with some potentially good deals on tickets, memorabilia, dining and historic tours.
