Hearing on newly proposed riverfront condos to be held next week

Still more upscale condominiums are planned for Detroit’s east riverfront, this time on vacant city-owned land east of the Harbor Hill Marina opposite Belle Isle.

City planners and developers from Morgan Development LLC presented their proposal to the City Planning Commission Thursday evening. Plans call for Morgan to build four 10-story condo towers and multiple low-rise buildings immediately east of the marina...

I wish it was one 40 story tower instead...Only joking, as it sounds like an interesting development

Finally, something of size and substance outside of the downtown area. It seems like 500 units at $550K is way too ambitious though.

Detroitstar,

That's exactly why they say they are phasing it. I, too, doubt we'll see 500 when it's all said and done, but better they dream big than not big enough.

It all depends. The only X factor here is the fact that waterfront property is always at a premium and always highly prized. With as crowded and built up as all the lakes in Oakland County are, it is not improbably that a demand would exist for those who wish to be on the water and have the means to pay for it. Also, when you put it in that perspective, $500,000 for waterfront property isn't that unreasonable.

To be 500 units, it would have to be larger than Harbortown, I believe. It seems unlikely that out past the McArthur Bridge you could get something that large, but who knows?

I'm surprised they're going with that spot. You'd think they'd try to get in on the whole Rivertown thing. Or really, any other location.

I kind of find it hard to believe that someone would pay $500,000+ to live there though.

That's great though, hopefully it works out.

^^^ This was a link showing that one of the last remaining public boat launches in Detroit would be a victim of this development. I'm all for the redevelopment of the waterfront, but not when it means that only a lucky (And wealthy) few will access to the river.

It just looks like a continuation of the "Gold Coast".... that east riverfront section from the Belle Isle Bridge to the Manoogian Mansion that was Detroit's riverfront premier highrise residential district for decades. It's just creeping farther east.

Plus with the Grayhaven area, Victoria Park, etc., there's more residential in that section of the east riverfront than there is in the fledgling warehouse district.

I wonder if the Edison power station (the 2 Brothers of the former "7 Sisters & 2 Brothers") will one day meet the same fate as the cement silos?
