At least you have to give Dick DeVos credit for at least coming to Detroit. |

No Dems showed up for the debate in Detroit sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus either, where is the outrage about that? (Message edited by perfectgentleman on July 12, 2007) |

Normally less than 10% of the black vote goes for the GOP. And most likely few of those in that 10% were in attendance for the NAACP convention. It seems pretty logical that a Republican candidate wouldn't invest their limited time and funding for little to no return. |

It doesn't help that the head of the NAACP has compared the Republicans to Nazi's. Not exactly welcoming. |

The Republicans need every last vote they can get this time around, which is why it is unfortunate for them that they missed such and event. Meanwhile, the Dems have got a great wind behind them, and have been branching out into proverbial lion's dens such as the discussion of their faith a few weeks back on cable television. Hey, I'm not going to complain. If the GOP wants to continue to alienate even more people and handicap themselves, I have no problem with that. |

Republican Tom Tancredo drew a loud cheer from the Detroit NAACP audience. He used his opening remarks to talk about illegal immigration, and how it was hurting American workers, and especially African-American workers. http://www.boston.com/news/pol itics/politicalintelligence/20 07/07/tancredo_wins_a.html Note - Senator Levin (MI-D) voted for the recent amnesty bill. Senator Stabenow (MI-D) voted against it |

quote:the Dems have got a great wind behind them, and have been branching out into proverbial lion's dens Except that they were afraid to go on Fox News, the highest rated cable news channel. They can TALK about their faith in venues that are accommodating to them, that is no big deal. After all, they know over 90% of the country believes in God so they are pandering to that, no surprise there. They don't say anything that hasn't been poll tested first. |

From the July 13, 2007 Detroit News:"The NAACP is a nonpartisan organization but President Bush and the Republican Party have continuously disrespected this organization," said Ruthie Stevenson of Mount Clemens, president of the Macomb Chapter of the NAACP. "It's totally disrespectful only one Republican came." Gee, I wonder why? Perhaps some of this "non-partisan" rhetoric from the Chairman of the NAACP might have something to do with it: From the July 26, 2006 Boston Globe:
At an event in North Carolina to mark Black History Month last February, Julian Bond, the chairman of the NAACP, unleashed a blistering attack on the Bush administration and the Republican Party. Among other discourtesies, he compared President George W. Bush's judicial appointees to the Taliban and described former Attorney General John Ashcroft, not for the first time, as ``J. Edgar Ashcroft." The Republican Party," Bond was reported as saying, ``would have the American flag and the swastika flying side by side." The NAACP is being poorly led and appears to be totally disorganized. Even the First Black President was a "no show" at the NAACP convention.
The NAACP has been without a permanent leader for four months since the resignation of Gordon, a business executive tapped to lead the organization in June 2005. Gordon resigned due to clashes with the 64-member board on the direction of the organization. Dennis C Hayes, the NAACP's general counsel, is serving as interim president until a permanent leader is found. Before the NAACP hires its next president, the membership should decide whether the board or the new president should run the organization to avoid power struggles, according to DeWayne Wickham, a journalist who has covered the NAACP since 1976. [source]
Former President Bill Clinton, scheduled to give the keynote address, canceled, though it was not immediately clear why. "It was on his calendar and it was on our program," said Deidre Malone, with the NAACP communications staff from Memphis. "We are not quite sure if the NAACP got a solid confirmation that he was coming, but we got a confirmation about an hour ago (10 a.m. Wednesday) that he won't be able to make it here today." .....Taking Clinton's place today will be rapper and record company executive Master P [source] |

quote:Maybe they prefer legitimate news outlets, and not the Republican mouthpiece that Fox Noise is? Even if that were true which it isn't, does that mean that the Dem candidates would not represent ALL CITIZENS as president, regardless of their party? Do they not feel it is useful to express their ideas in a forum that would reach millions of citizens that they would not normally reach? The sad truth is that they are afraid of hard questions and have no answers for this city due to their overt hostility to the domestic auto industry. Questions would have been asked they do not want to answer due to the network sponsoring the event and the location which would have been Detroit. If the Republicans were open enough to appear on the left-wing MSNBC and listen to Chris Matthews nonsense, the Dems could have done the Fox debate sponsored by the CBC. Of course he's not running for anything, but he wasn't invited to the debate, he was invited to be their keynote speaker and for some reason, he did not show up. By the way, did Hillary bring her phony Southern drawl with her to the debate? |
