The only building I can think of on the block north (same side of street) is the police academy building. I seem to remember something about it... um...

it's the women's colony club building at 2310 park avenue, owned by chuck forbes. has been restored/renovated on the inside. most current work was done thru matching facade improvement dollars (woodward streetscape). we talked about it fairly extensively last year. you can find the old thread in the archives for history and such.

"North" apparently is a difficult concept for some.

The building in question is east of the Hotel Park Avenue. It must be the Police Academy Building. The Women's Club Building is at the corner of Park and Elizabeth across from/north of the Park Bar.

The renovations to the Police Academy Building are similar to the Woman's Club Building. The windows have the same brown panes that compliment the exterior brick of each building quite well.

look people, there are two former women's clubs on park avenue. the women's city club built by matilda dodge wilson, on the corner of park and elizabeth, which once housed the police recruitment center. then there is the women's colony club, that i described above, one block north of the detroit life building, that once housed the detroit police academy.

The Women's Colony Club building is the one with the arches above the 3rd story. That building has a spectacular 2 story Louis XV ballroom on the 2nd and 3rd floor (the arches frame the 2 story windows of that room). That room has to be one of the most elegant spaces in downtown, with balconies of the 3rd floor looking down on the room. Awesome!

The Women's Colony Club Building is the leftmost of the 4 buildings in this picture. The others are labeled under the photo.

Gistok, thanks for the info. Yeah, the Colony Club building is the one I was talking about. It's looking good. Do you know if it's occupied currently, or if they have future tennants in mind?

Billk, I don't know about the occupancy of the Colony Club Building, sorry.

But the Detroit Life Building is the one that is owned by Mike Ilitch, and is being fixed up for some of his employees to move into.
