There is more than meets the eye when it comes to Detroit.

Just ask Sam Register, the executive producer behind the new 2-D "Transformers Animated," a highly-anticipated robotic cartoon series set in the "D" and slated to arrive on Cartoon Network in early 2008.

A new twist on the original, "Transformers Animated" will follow Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and the rest of the noble Autobots as they battle a sinister Megatron and his ghoulish gang of Deceptacons in a futuristic version of our fine city.

As for Motown, Register had a couple different motives for picking this place.

"The official reason is automobiles started in Detroit, and the robots turn into cars," Register says. The other reason is that Register's in-laws live in Palmer Woods, and he wanted to show them some love. After all, it was at their urging that Register and his wife got married at the Hotel St. Regis in city's New Center area.

Register took a number of detailed photographs and handed them over to his animators, who hopefully will be more kind to Detroit than the makers of the "RoboCop" movies.

I'm not a big fan of them, but anything good that has to do with Detroit, I'm happy with.

Let's just hope they paint a bright future for Detroit and not one that continues the stereotypes.

Oh lord, I feel like a kid again. I'm actually planning on checking this out. Maybe they could have the RenCen be the new Metroplex.

Wonder if there will be an episode where a scrapper steals a robot leg?
