I suppose I buy as many Detroit-bred products as the first three people but does it really matter whether or not I buy my Kashi cereal at University Foods on Warren or Target in Allen Park. Well, I guess it is important to support local merchants since most of us would probably prefer to see a wider selection when it comes to grocery stores. |

I have been talking to local merchants about opening up a CBD grocery store and they still seem hesitant. They said that after the BC opens and they can see some density there they would be more open to the idea. With that would hopefully will come more variety. We should all use this post to list local merchants we believe we should support. |

I don't live in Detroit, but I always give the stores in the city that I live in first shot at my money. The closer they are to my home the better. They still have to provide a good product and service but I think it only makes sense to support businesses in community in which you live. |

Vernor's is not available everywhere in CA, and it actually ends up being cheaper to have it shipped in bulk (about 70 cents per can versus $1.25). |

Kingsford is Detroit? I know Henry Ford started making the charcoal, but I think the company is owned by Clorox now..... I actually have an awesome deli here in Palo Alto that has Faygo! So I always get a root beer when there. It is actually very good. They have Vernor's too. |

No. Really, what's left? Dudek's very good food has been replaced on the store shelves with every imaginable flavor of hummous available, next to salsa's of every variety and flavor. My perpetually broken 2002 & 2005 Cadillac's have been replaced by a Honda. The only thing I've requested from my "homeland" was Big Boy's seasoning salt. Good Luck Detroit! |

Since I have to be here today at work I can say that I shop Detroit extensively. Just today I drove my Ford Expedition to the Honeybee Market in SW Detroit and bought dinner for the family and a Rotisserie Chicken for myself, to eat at work. I stopped at a Marathon Station and bought a bag of Lays Spicy BBQ chips and 2 bags of Better Made Hot chips to put in my locker. I have 1 Faygo redpop and a Pepsi. I make it a habit to shop Detroit 80 percent of the time. My family and I "do" Detroit to keep Detroit going. I stress that all the time in my household. Other places that we frequent in our area 1. Plaka's 2. Downtown Jimmy Johns 3. Eastern Market 4. Downtown Starbucks 5. Mexican Village 6. Detroit Riverwalk 7. Honeybee Market 8. MexicanTown 9. Slows Due to the fact that we are in close proximity of Downtown, this is where we do most of our shopping and playing. |

Ford, Chrysler, and GM are sold all over USA. There's a local dealer near you. Bottled Vernors and Faygo are sold out of a warehouse in Los Angeles. So it easy to get vintage product on the West Coast. Sanders is available on line BTW. jjaba, 48238. |

Wouldn't you rather keep the dough flowing in dedicated company's pockets instead of their competing out of town places or OVER-SEAS CARS CORPS? Any of these companies could easily relocate. Instead, they decide to rough it out in Detroit, and you give them no love. Oh wow. |

I have nothing against cars made in the states. If I buy another one, it may very well be made here. But, it also better be the best deal. I am not that admirable Broke. I didn't go green on purpose. I just don't have any available parking except on the street and it is quicker for me to get to work using transit. It just made sense for me. |

I think what urbanize is trying to say that it is better to support local business than non local that said you can still have your favorite beer from penn. which is also not bad because it is a smaller company but when you buy your products just be conscious of where they come from in general and the whole concept of fetishism of commodities. |

And don't go there with the "quality" issue. You can't expect quality products unless the company has quality money. That's why every penny helping to support local companies will help to improve their products and lower their prices. |

what is up with detroit shirts though, Detroit shirt companys shirts say made in nicaragua and only sell them at showtime, Pure detroit say sweatshop free but made in Los Angles although an older pure detroit shirt says made in Honduras, and Made in Detroit say designed and assembled in Detroit, but only sell their clothing in one store in detroit(Showtime). Well I still will support them because its detroit it is hard to find many truly detroit clothing retailers. |

I love Detroit businesses and products... My hubby and I frequent: Eastern Market Sheds, Hirt's, Germack, Gratiot Central Mkt, Zeff's, Rocky's, U Foods, Plaka's, American & Lafayette Coney, Union Street, Majestic, TJ's, Slow's, Taqueria Lupita, Mexican Village, Armando's, and many more... We buy Detroit brands too! Better Made, Faygo, Sander's, Avalon Breads, Stroh's Ice Cream (when we can find it), Detroit Beer Co., Kingsford - didn't know it was from here but it's what they have at Forest Liquor I moved to the city about 3 years ago. I grew up Downriver and always wanted to live here. My mother has always (except 1 job) worked down here since she was 16 and had a job at the Hudson bldg at Meyer Jeweler's which she rode the bus from LP to get to. She started taking me to Eastern Mkt for flowers on Saturdays when I was very young and we would eat breakfast at Farmers Mkt Rest. She used to bring home tacos from Armandos for as long as I can remember. I love the city and I love supporting local vendors, artists, musicians, etc. They are what makes this city so great and unique. I would've moved here sooner, but I didn't have the means...I plan on staying here as long as I possibly can. |

"Any of these companies could easily relocate. Instead, they decide to rough it out in Detroit, and you give them no love. Oh wow." Urbanize... most of the companies you noted, with the exception of Better Made and the local small businesses (Avalon) were sold off or were never Detroit buisnesses in the first place, so, tell me what a "Detroit Product" is and I'll buy it. The Kingsford Products Company is a subsidiary of The Clorox Company, headquartered in Oakland, Calif. Sanders is owned by Morley Candy Makers of Clinton Township Stroh's Beer - In 1999, The nation's fourth largest brewer, sold off their labels and breweries to Pabst and Miller. Faygo Beverages, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Beverage Corp., which is based in Ft Lauderdale Florida. (They also own EverFresh Juice Co.) Vernors- The Vernor family owned the company until 1966 when they sold it to an investment group. The company was next acquired by American Consumer Products and then by United Brands before being purchased by A&W Beverages in 1987. A&W was later purchased by Cadbury Schweppes. Uncle Ray's- while made in Detroit now, the company was founded in Dearborn. Slim Jim is a brand of dry meat snack manufactured by ConAgra Foods, Inc. ConAgra is headquartered in Omaha Nebraska. Kar’s Nuts- Located in Madison Heights, MI, has been in business since 1933 when the company got its start selling roasted peanuts at Tigers’ baseball games outside Brigg’s stadium. After WWII, the business moved to Ferndale. Then to a larger Madison Heights location. (Message edited by higgs1634 on July 05, 2007) |

Ok, I went to the other thread... in order to shop Detroit, looks like I'm limited to Better Made Chips. (Now, if only there was a supermarket in which to buy them.) Kowolski abandoned Detroit for Hamtramck shortly after its inception and does not have one Deli store in Detroit. Red Pelican, Hq is on Mack in Grosse Pointe. Garden Fresh foods? Nope, that's Ferndale. |

Am a big fan of Cadillac Coffee's Orange Pekoe Tea. Am sure the company started in Detroit, but now has its HQ in Madison Heights. However, its coffee beans and tea leaves definitely don't come from the Michigan area and its coffees are roasted in Indiana. In the NY area, you can find the former Detroit product Stroh's, but otherwise, the only real Michigan product I've seen out here would be Michigan blueberries. |

Try LaCroix carbonated mineral waters. They're delicious, especially the lemon. No calories, no sugar, and it's a Warren made product. I've almost given up soda (pop) for this stuff. http://www.lacroixwater.com/ |
