Here are a few shots from the east side during yesterday’s rainy weather:

The rain came down hard at 1:30, and was on and off till 6:00. It gave the city the dark, ominous feel I like for picture taking.

Charlottepaul, that development is on Mack at Grey. I usually don’t photograph new stuff, unless it’s burning. But the sky was looking so cool at the time that I snapped it any way. Sharmaal is correct, Pinewood73. Here's more of the little house:

And here’s new construction on the water front:

Thanks for posting Bulletmagnet.

Just looked at a satellite view of the area...

I can't believe how much open land there is!

Makes you wonder why this particular section of Detroit has so many abandoned/vacant lots compared to other parts of the city.

Even though it is close to Grosse Pointe.

The east side is far more open then the west side is. I'm not sure why that is, Pinewood73. As times goes on, more and more structures are replaced by...prairie. I think this process is cool in one sense, mom nature being the ultimate victor in the end. There are people who move OUT of the city just for this reason; they want to get away from the crowed city and into the open country. Who would a thunk it?

I work for a company that is building some of the new rental units on the east side, in the area of these pictures, but not the one shown.

We built 10 units that were finished in late 2005. There is a very high crime rate in the area..lots of gang activity. 4 of the 10 units were broken into, graffiti was written all over the property, water meters stolen or broken. We had several move-outs in the first year because of it.

Also have had trouble with residents paying the rent. The landlord/tenant courts in the City are very lenient and will continue to give more time to people who owe money. Then the tenant will skip out owing thousands of dollars. It's no wonder more people don't invest in this type of housing. with all the people who "skip" leaving money owed and major damage to the place, there is no benefit for the investors.

Despite the problems though, we are looking at buying more vacant lots and building more units. Hopefully, with continued investment in the area, the situation will improve.

Blueidone, that's very interesting. I've always thought that going into blighted areas and doing some kind of development could be rewarding, though I don't know anything about housing and construction. I would imagine you face many challenges making things profitable when you face such crime and vandalism problems.

Thanks for sharing the pix, Bullet. I find the subject of land reverting back to nature very interesting. The guy on the DetroitBlog site did a very cool piece on the area behind the State Fair that dealt with this.

Thanks for that linkage, Pythonmaster. I have it bookmarked now. Yes, the land back from whence it came, and us?
