Just saw a blimp with the Sanyo logo on the side over the St Clair Shores area. Any idea what's going on with that? Does it tie into the RiverDays festivities by chance???

I know there have been several times when aircraft that fly over Detroit for major events circle out over this area.

I say it in Troy 2 days ago, and then downtown 1 hour later. I have never observed a blimp flying around where it looked like the pilot was drunk like I did that day. It was doing nose-dives.

That blimp was in Ann Arbor last weekend too. I assuming it was over here for the NASCAR race at MIS.

I saw it in Grosse Pointe, it was doing some circles around a group of small sailboats. I thought it might be here for the Pt Huron to Mackinaw race, but that is a month away. It was neat to see and the kids got a trill from it.

You can see the Sanyo Blimp docked at the Municipal airport on Grosse Ile from time to time. My grandparents live on the Island and I always drive by there on the way to their house.

Speaking of blimps, here's a couple of interesting shots from a few years ago. They were all Goodyear's but I don't remember what was going on that brought them all to town.

According to their website the blimp is on an 8 city tour spending some time doing charity work making stops at schools and hospitals to give children rides.

Ramcharger,

Amazing picture! I had ran down to get my camera, as I was living at RIverfront at the time, and by the time I returned they were out of site. Would have been a very up close picture of them, but I missed the chance. Glad to see that SOMEBODY had their camera ready to go.

I've heard stories from people in the roughest parts of town saying their neighbors would shoot at the Goodyear blimp as it flew overhead. That was a long time ago, but still, makes you glad they are still usuable and not all destroyed

These Sanyo blimps are far smaller than the Goodyear blimps, right?

I once worked with a former Navy blimp pilot. He shrugged it off. I envied him :-)

It flew over Royal Oak a few weeks ago. I saw it last weekend in Troy and couldn't get over how maneuverable it looked. I saw the Goodyear's downriver a couple years ago. That looked odd.

For whatever reason, that makes it sound like the blimp was playing baseball in Cass Corridor. Maybe I had one too many whiskeys..

And honestly, this thread is exactly what Sanyo wants: put a blimp above a city and hope it generates conversation, or at least puts the word (Sanyo) in people's heads.

I saw the very same blimp Wednesday afternoon over Bloomfield and Pontiac. In other blimp news, one night about 2 years ago I kept hearing what sounded like an engine constantly moaning overhead. I went outside to see the Goodyear blimp hovering! I realized it was here for the Pistons game back when they were in the finals. I ended up seeing it the next day docked at Oakland Airport.

I read somewhere that the Good Year blimps DO get shot at every year. Kinda scary but I guess unless there is a catastrophic loss of helium, it'll remain afloat for a very very long time still. It's mind boggling that people have nothing better to do than to shoot at blimps.

I've seen it quite a bit. Over Warren near the GM Tech Center, and last Saturday at the Gratiot Cruise.

My grand children love looking for it...I thought it was here for the Cruise. It was also seen on the Jobbie Nooner website overlooking the debauchery...

I was laughing as the crowd got distracted by this blimp instead of watching the excellent Kenny Wayne Shepherd concert.

Pilot was doing some radical dives, surely to GET their attention! Plus, I'd guess floating around to the drone of the engines can get a little boring, gotta do something to spice up the flight if Mother Nature doesn't fuck with it first.

A few of the rednecks in the crowd made like they were aiming and shooting at it...heck, I did too, the sunburn from last week's Duluth Marathon hasn't quite faded.

Then I realized that Target should never have advertising blimps...

The Goodyear Blimps and these Sanyo blimps are puny compared to the original German Zeppelin's of the 20's & 30's.

"....that Goodyear blimps get shot at every year." How lousy a shot to you have to be, to be challenged by shooting at a Blimp? For crying outr loud they're HUGE! Its kind of like hitting the broadside of a barn. But when ya remember that the drive-by gangsters usually hit everybody except who they're after, maybe it is an accomplishment.

Sticks,
You not a buzzed as you think:
In grammar, a dangling modifier is a misplaced modifier, a word or phrase that is intended to modify one element of a sentence, but that owing to its placement in the sentence, seems to modify another element, or none at all. (A modifier is an adjective or adverb that changes the meaning of another word. An adjective modifies the meaning of a noun or pronoun, while an adverb modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb.)

A dangling modifier is commonly an adverbial phrase which, rather than modifying the grammatical subject of the sentence, seems to modify an unintended noun or pronoun due to the position the modifier occupies within the sentence; a dangling modifier most often appears at the very beginning of a sentence. An example from Strunk and White's Elements of Style: "Being in a dilapidated condition; I was able to buy the house very cheap." The sentence is presumably intended to mean, "The house being in a dilapidated condition, I was able to buy it cheap". In the flawed version, the placement of the participial phrase "being in a dilapidated condition" makes it difficult to know whether it is the house or the speaker, "I", that is dilapidated.

Modifiers sometimes are intended to describe the attitude or mood of the speaker, even when the speaker isn't part of the sentence. Some such modifiers are fairly standard and are not considered dangling modifiers—"speaking of [topic]", for example, is commonly used as a transition from one topic to a related one. However, in a sentence such as "fuming, she left the room", "fuming" can only mean one thing, it modifies "she".

from wikipedia

I love misplaced modifiers because they are always funny once you notice them.

the blimp was over the downriver area late saturday, and i saw it rising from the riverfront this morning before 8am.

my only guess is that maybe someone is using to make arial shots for SE michigan publicity or mabye one of the online map programs like live view or something given the frequency of flights and varied locales its been spotted above

Not to be a buzzkill, but Homeland Security did have some money for a blimp-based camera surveillance system...for urban areas, especially during public events.

I'd go looking for the link, but I'm too lazy today.

I could totally see it being some sort of "eye in the sky" for Homeland Security, down to the incompetent choice of pimping an electric company over the Motor City.

I was curious about the size comparison. The Sanyo blimp is 165 ft long. The four active Goodyear blimps are 192 ft long. The Hindenburg was 804 ft long.

Hindenburg disaster.
