What's everyone's favorite food/restaurant. I like the Glass Onion up in Clinton Township, they have very good polish food. I got some other places I like to eat at as well in Mexican town, just can't remember the name of the place I go to eat at. (yeah brainfart).

I loooove Soshimikos in Mexitown! You can't beat 'em. American Coney Island is really good too. I heard the place on top of the RenCen is really nice, but it's not in this student's budget.

Detroit has great thai food. tried it in DC, Chicago, NY, Boston and Philly -- ours is on a much higher level (the other cities seem to have a watered-down-for-the-tourists version), and cheaper. (actually, for any $10-20 meal (not including drinks) I think Detroit has more to offer than any of those cities)

Hey Jim! I figured people would know what I was talking about if I spelled it phonetically. It's a hard word to spell! It looks like even you had to edit it once.

You have to admit - no matter how you spell it, their food is great!

Yes, Thai. Sala Thai in Eastern Market also has great food. I must say my favorite cuisine is Middle Eastern. I loves me some Shish Kafta!

sizzle and spice is some of the best Indian food i've ever had. Middle eastern is also always a good choice.

Civil asked about european restaurants? Baile Cork in corktown is good irish food. French is always a good choice too. what's that sweet german restaurant a bit north in detroit?

If you are looking for German food, two places come to mind - Jacoby's in Bricktown, and the Dakota Inn Rathskeller north of 6 on John R. I haven't been to Jacoby's since they changed owners, but heard that they kept many of the signature menu items. The Rathskeller to me scored points for the step back in time decor, and live piano. But many of the food items that we ordered were only cafeteria quality.

Now how about place where to buy good ethnic foods. I know a place on Mound Rd in Sterling Heights(little polish deli) that has some real good pierogies, and polish meat's. I had their kielbasa it's very good. Also I know of a good Italian deli by 15 mile rd & Dodge Park. Ive gotten from them there hot italian sausage, homemade raviloi, and some sharp provolone and pepperoni. Yummm Yummmm!!!!

Annam in Dearborn is a great Vietnamese restaurant - small, nice interior, great food and service.

Luigi's in Farmington has very tasty Italian, and further west up Grand River, Bangkok Kitchen gets my vote for best Thai.

I had dinner last night at Polonia on Yemans, just east of Jos. Campau. As usual, I had the pork chops, dill pickle soup, shredded beets, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. Ate every last bite.

Is that Srodek's on Mound under the same ownership as the one on Campau in Hamtramck? That place is a store though, not a restaurant.

If you're already in Royal Oak I'd suggest driving a little further up to Clawson and getting better sushi at Noble Fish.

and pretty soon you'll even be able to stop next door and sing some karaoke.

I agree about Noble Fish. It's so much better than Little Tree. I won't even step foot in Little Tree.

Bucci is awesome and the owners aren't even Italian.

John R in Madison Heights has one good Viet restaurant after another. I like the pho at Thang Long, and the bahn mi at the restaurant on 13 and John R that is always changing its name.

There are several Asian grocers on that strip that sell great spices, sauces and condiments.

I'll give ya that Little Tree has the ambiance. Noble Fish is crowded and has three tables in the back of the store but the product is better.

Priya on Maple has some delicious Indian food, too.

Just a side point, to get to the men's room you have to go through the kitchen, amazing how clean that kitchen is, and I've been in many restaurants' kitchens.

Middle Eastern takeout from Mr. Kabob's!!! Located at the Sunoco station on 12 Mile and Coolidge in Berkley, their food is terrific. Good portions for the price too.

Jams is absolutely correct. It's the cleanest, most charming old restaurant kitchen that I know of. If you should dine at Polonia, make sure you visit the men's room.
Also, as often as I've eaten at Polonia over the years, I'm still fooled, momentarily, by the mirrors lining the east wall of the first dining room.

I am a fan of Polish Village, Polonia and Under the Eagle, but all for different things. Polish Village has excellent Zrazy (stuffed beef rolls) and they are served with Kopytka (tasty potato dumplings). Polonia serves excellent quality meat and their pork chops and kielbasa are cooked just right, the kielbasa even snaps when you cut into it. Under the Eagle has excellent tomato dumpling soup and nalesniki (crepes). So depending on what you are in the mood for, they all have their stand out dishes. If you are interested in Romanian food, the only place I know of that is still in business is "La Hungry Boyer" on Michigan Av. west of Livernois. Being that I am Romanian, I am very picky when it comes to Romanian food, but for someone who wants a taste of our culture, the sarmale (stuffed pickled cabbage) is quite good, as well as the ciorbe (sour soups) that vary daily. For Hungarian food, The Rhapsody in Southgate is quite spendy, but I absolutely adore their cucumber salad and dumplings with paprikash style gravy, and their desserts are top notch.

Civil,

Ventimiglia's on 15& Dodge Park is what your thinking of. They use to be in the old neighborhood on Bessmore and Vinton back in the day. Had a place near 7 and kelly as well. Best place for Italian subs, hands down. Great place.

Vito's is the best Italian Bakery in Metro Detroit. No one comes close. Best Lemon Ice, Cannolis, and cookies.

Armando's and Me Pueblo IMO blow Xochimilco out of the water. Two in the burbs that are great are, Juan Miguel's and Azteca on Mound & Hall Road.

Best Italian hands down in Netties on Gratiot north of 12 mile. No one beats it. This coming from a very picky Italian. Try the Chicken spiedini and their minestrone soup. Larcos I like as well. Pricey though.

Polonia for Polish all the way. Also this little dive bar/polish place on J.Camp just south of the Davison. Can't remember the name. Lukich on Rochester south of Wattles is a great burb place for Polish food.

Indian. Love American Marsala and Woodlands.

Filipino. This lil place on 19 & Dequindre has great deserts and lunches. Check it out.

God damn am I hungry now.

Jennifer, I'm no expert on Filipino food, but I've heard good things about Tita Si's Filipino and American Restaurant in Garden City.

The Metro Times has restaurant listings by cuisine type and I think they list it there.

It seems to me there is also a pretty good Filipino restaurant on Ryan around 13 Mile called Jade or at least there was a couple years back.

Hope that helps.

Are you kidding there are at least 10 stores that sell pierogies, kielbasa and such in Hamtramck.
I have to say Hamtramck has the most diversity of ethnic resturants and shops in the Detroit area.

The Bar on Campau south of Davison is the Krakus ?? Yum!!

Polish groceries in Hamtramck: For a good variety of everything, try the Polish Market on JC just south of Caniff on the east side of the road. Great bread and packaged European products. Buy a bottle of the soft drink Fanta Shokata...you won't get it until you try it, but they sell it in Romania and it is very difficult to get here in the states.

For fresh sausage, Srodek's on JC between Holbrook and Caniff on the west side of the street cannot be beat.

For baked goods and treats, the Martha Washington Bakery on JC just south of Caniff on the west side of the road is quite decent, since I don't know what is going on with Oaza Bakery anymore.

If you are on the southwest side, try I believe it's called Mikolaczek's European Sausage? The address is 8616 Michigan Ave Detroit, MI 48210. Very friendly staff and outstanding service.

I hope these can be a start, and between these stores, you have the makings of an excellent Polish meal :-)

I call the intersection of 15 Mile and Dequindre our own little United Nations. You have a Polish restaurant and market, a Thai place, a Middle Eastern eatery and market, a Korean restaurant, an Indian restaurant and market, a place that serves pasties, and to top it off there's a pizza joint on the southwest corner!

I will third Bangkok Crossing for Thai food and agree with Rb336 on the quality and value of Detroit Thai food. In Chicago, horrible Thai food is easier to find than anything decent and I've never heard of a Thai restaurant in Detroit where the rice doesn't come free.
