I'll be coming to the Detroit area this August. Of course, I'll be eating all my favorite Michigan food that are not available here in San Diego, CA (coneys, Big Boys, polish food, almond boneless chicken, White Castles, Buscemi's, Great lakes Perch, Better Made Chips, etc.) My question is: Who has the best perch dinners?

There don't seem to be many places left that serve (or promote) perch dinners. Sort of a dying tradition...

Nobody beats Duffy's in Amherstburg, ON. What can compare to a high speed boat ride across the river, followed by an incredible perch dinner?

Salt & Pepper.
Roll in flour.
Deep fry in a stick of oleo and a scoop or 2 of Crisco (even amounts, maybe a little more Crisco).

325-350 degrees.

Turn twice, 4 times better, as it browns. Checking & poking every few minutes. Dry on paper towels. Keep warm in 125-150 degree oven until ready to serve.

Cleaning them? Lop off their heads including gills, slit from anus to front. Take out the goo from anus to front. Cut off fins except tail. Grab skin at front and pull off each side. Rinse. Pat dry.

Yummy!

James

When you get good at it, with a good small fillet knife, you can do a perch in 30 seconds... Tops.

Clean them faster than you can fry them

The Friday Night Fish Fry is definitely becoming a thing of the past thanks to the Catholic Church loosening the rules.

My favorites have been out of the way holes in the wall Up North that I can't remember the names of, but the liquid in my system at those times might have something to do with that.

There was a place in Livonia, I think on Middlebelt, where we used to get the most amazing fish in the early 80's - I can't recall the name, but it came in those wonderful white cardboard boxes with the grease soaking through....Mmmmmmm!!!!

I just had sauted' Great Lakes perch at the Rattlesnake Club. It was served on a bed of mashed potatoes, lots of perch and topped with thin, deep-fried onion rings. It's Jimmy Schmidt's house speciality and he did a great job. Couldn't eat it all.

Shirley's located on Dubois near the incenerator. Gives you more for your money. Perch dinner is $9.53 with taxes included. You get 6-8 pieces of nice sized perch, fries, salad, and two pieces of wheat bread. You will love it! The place is located just a block behind Chene on Dubois.

I know two restaurant, however they are not in Detroit (but pretty close). The first one is Pat O'Briens on 10 Mile and Jefferson in St. Clair Shores, and the second is a bar called Boatworks on Harper between 11 & 12 Mile Road.

We used to be able to get a good perch dinner...walleye on Fridays...at a place on Cadieux...hope someone can remember the name...they used to serve dime beers on St. Pat's Day...the place was always so jammed you could barely squeeze in...beers would be passed from the bar through the crowd...that was in the '60's...seems like maybe they opened a satellite place somewhere in the burbs too.

GPYC serves excellent perch dinners. Otherwise Adiamos on E Jefferson just up from 9 Mile is very good also.
John Cross Fisheries used to be the best (in Charlevoix) --the best----buy 'em when the boat pulls in, bring 'em home and do you own thing.
I don't know if JCF is still going strong or not.

mortalman---When was the last time you had perch at the St. Clair Inn? I have been going up there for 47 years, and just love the location and have attended several meetings and dinners there.
But for the last 10 years, we never seem to get the same service or quality of food. The Marine Historical Society of Detroit has had its annual dinner there for several years, and about three years ago, they finally gave up on the place and now have their dinner elsewhere.
The Inn has certainly had its up and downs,as well as changes of ownership, and that's too bad, as it is a lovely building and the location can't be beat.I hope you can give me some encouraging news.

I used to love the St. Clair Inn...great place for a get-away weekend with a significant other...we also held my parents' 50th anniversary there...they loved to watch the big boats come in so close.

I just remembered the name of the place with the perch and walleye dinners...it was the Colony East Bar...now I'm not certain if it was on Cadieux or Morang...many years ago.

Perhaps you are referring to KaVan's that was on Morang around Balfour for many years. I know the formal name was KaVan's Colony East, but everyone I know referred to as simply "KaVan's". Are Bill or Clarence KaVan alive anymore ?

They have a place on Hayes just south of 12 Mile. I don't know if that was opened in the 1970's or 1980's. For a short time they had a location on Hall Rd. west of Schoenherr in Sterling Heights. At the Hall Rd. location I was told by a staff member that a corporation owned KaVan's. The implication I walked away with is that the KaVan family has nothing to do with the place anymore and its just the name. Bill KaVan use to live on Beaconsfield and Clarence on McKinney off of Morang. It seem back then in Detroit a lot more business owners wanted to live near their establishment.

I went to Pat O'Brien's last night for perch. HORRIBLE experience. My partner ordered Guiness. The waitress came back a few minutes later, no Guiness. It's an Irish bar but they don't have Guiness???? There were cig ashes in my water, the beer was warm, the potatoes cold, the clow slaw limp and soggy. We were charged for drinks we never ordered then we waited forever for the waitress to correct the bill. My clothes smelled from the guy at the bar smoking a bad cigar. I won't be going back there.

Perch Dinners?
There are many places that serve a decent dinner. If you would like to have a religious experience, get in your car, travel north on I-75, to St. Ignace, turn left on US 2, go past Manistique about 20 miles and turn right on Federal Forest Highway 13. go north about 20 miles to Delta county road # 440 and follow the signs to the "Camel Riders." Bring your own beverages, (beer, liquor) because they have only a resort license.

Has anyone ever been to Frank's bar in Wyandotte? I remember my grandpa taking me there from 87 til 93 every few weeks for perch on Fridays. I haven't been there since, but I remember the perch being very very good... It was like a house with a bar inside. All wood paneling, wood floors... old concession stand style menuboard. I'm wondering if it's still around?

Guess I should probably go check for myself haha.. but yeah it was really good.

Rfban - the Frank's you're talking of is a different place. They've both been around forever. I've been to each of them. I mapped the one I'm looking for and I think I'm going to try going there tonight... heh. I'm with Kenp I need some Perch!

If it's still there, I'll post about it, because I remember it being very very delish. =)

P.S. - the pizza at Frank's on biddle is really good and totally worth the wait. Funny, I was just talking about that place too...

Update - did go to Frank's and it was still there. It's on the corner of Forest and 7th in the middle of a quiet neighborhood in Wyandotte. If you like perch, they've been preparing it deliciously since 1933. The place looks exactly the same as it did when I was a kid (about 15-20 years ago) and has probably been the same since the 40s or 50s. Same tables and chairs, same wood paneling on the walls. The only difference is they've installed a pool table and some Red Bull gear to appease/attract a younger crowd I suppose.

They only serve the perch on Fridays, but they don't just have perch they have walleye too. It's their "Fish Fry Friday" and they have 4 butterflied filets for 8.95 or 9.95.

I *highly* recommend it. I'm definitely going back since yesterday was only Thursday and I didn't get to have any perch. Boo.

It's really hard to find, so I would google it if you plan on going - Frank's Cafe, Wyandotte MI.

Since the old lady died and took the recipe to her grave, the perch dinners haven't tasted the same at Frank's Cafe in Wyandotte. Same with the Ivanhoe or Polish Yacht Club.

I heartily recommend the excellent Yellow Lake Erie Perch at The Seafood Restaurant in Sylvania near Toledo. Their address is 5504 Alexis Rd, Sylvania, OH 43560.

Gotta jump on the Sinbad's bandwagon. Their Perch is ALWAYS great, and the service is too!

Okay...OKAY...enough of this perch talk already...the drool on my keyboard is makin' a mess!!...out here in the desert the closet thing to a perch is fried gecko...

There used to be a couple of great perch dinners to be had in little restaurants in Caseville and Port Austin...my parents had a cottage near Sleeper State Park when I was a kid...a big treat was to go into town for a perch dinner...on those days when my dad and I didn't haul a mess of them out of Saginaw Bay.

Looking forward to trying Frank's on a Friday when I visit my Mom down there.

Ivanhoes (PYC) ranks #1 for me, Sinbads a very close second.

My sister recently took us to an Amvets, Vfw, or some vet's club near Gibraltar, just south of Lake Erie Metropark, that has an all-you-can-eat Perch dinner on Fridays which was quite good.
